Close fight for last playoff tickets
2008/09 CEV Indesit Champions League
Luxembourg, January 16, 2009. After the fifth leg of the 2008/09 CEV Indesit Champions League, five teams remain unbeaten. A close fight will determine the 12 (Women) and 16 (Men) playoff finalist of the Women’s and Men’s 2008/09 CEV Indesit Champions League. The sixth and deciding round will take place on January 20th (Women) and January 21st (Men).
In the Men’s top duel in Pool C, Knack Randstad secured a precious victory at home after a thrilling fourth set against Italy’s Lube Banca Marche MACERATA. The match started with a festival of missing serves on both sides. A pipe combination with Verhanneman brought 3:3 on the scoreboard. And Verhanneman kept being the decisive player of the beginning of the match with three attacks and a block (8-6). MACERATA could take over at 11-12 with Snippe but Tuerlinckx made the difference with two aces (21-18 and 22-18) and Snippe failed in attack (25-21). The second set brought a close match from 6-8 over 16-12. Setter Guilherme put his middlemen Radovic and Pajusalu at work and they made the difference in attack and in block with again 25-21 as a final result. In set three, Knack Randstad kept the pressure on the Italians (8:6) but the set turned at 15:16. The Italian opposite Bartoletti (second best scorer with 21 points) scored at a very high level in this set and brought his team back in the game with 19-25. Knack Randstad was not impressed and took the better start in set four with 8-3 and 16-11. But also MACERATA wanted the victory and came back point after point until 18-18; the packed audience (2,200 spectators in the Schiervelde Hall) could witness a thrilling end. Knack Randstad had four match balls and MACERATA had one set ball in between but finally, thanks to Nikic, Verhanneman and MVP Tuerlinckx (best scorer with 22 points) Knack Randstad took the set and the victory with 30-28 and also the lead in Pool C.
Without the leader Lyubov Sokolova, Zarechie ODINTSOVO could do nothing but lose Wednesday’s top game in Pool D against a very motivated Farmutil PILA 0:3 (22-25, 23-25, 20-25). The best scorer of the Polish side was Bednarek with 15 points. Kosmatka added 13 more points. Walewska Oliveira scored 13 times for Zarechie as well as Fateeva did. Farmutil PILA started the game very concentrated, especially in reception. It was difficult for Zarechie to find some good solutions in the offense in the absence of Lyubov Sokolova. But then experienced setter Irina Zhukova started to involve Walewska Oliveira and Tatiana Kosheleva. Zarechie immediately made an impressive 7-0 (14-8) run. But the team could not continue the same way. Zarechie started to make mistakes and even forced Vadim Pankov to call a time out as the difference between the teams almost disappeared. Farmutil managed to get back into the game with Hendzel and Bednarek for the provisional 21:23. Zarechie tried hardly to save the set but did not succeed (22-25). The second set was tighter but also very spectacular. Farmutil tried to use the maximum number of players. Zarechie did not make changes at all. The rivals came up to the sixteenth minute with an even score: 17-17. Farmutil added some power in the actions and made a 3-0 run, Zarechie answered back with Walewska Oliveira (19-20) but did not find enough strength for the final minutes of the set which ended up at 23-25. In the final set Farmutil was the mental leader on the court from the very beginning. The spectators even started whistling and shouting at their own team to motivate the girls. But Teixeira and Kosmatka seemed to be unstoppable. The closest difference between the teams was registered in the middle of the set after an ace for Olga Fateeva (16:18). But then Farmutil once again put themselves together and won the set (20-25). “It seems like Zarechie expected the game to be an easy one, - says Farmutil head coach Jerzy Matlak. – I am pleased my players were patient enough to keep on playing as a well organized team. We stayed together and played good in defense. Of course, the absence of Sokolova influenced the game. But other players of Zarechie are also experienced and they are a complete strong team even without Sokolova on the court”. “We used to have problems with injured players all the season long. This game is not an exception. But no matter if we have Sokolova in the roster or not we should stay focused for all the game long, - mentioned Vadim Pankov, Zarechie’s head coach.
Defending champion and Pool leader Colussi Perugia continued an impressive winning streak in the Main Phase defeating DELA Martinus AMSTELVEEN in three straight sets (25-17, 25-17 and 25-16). Next week, Zarechie ODINTSOVO, Farmutil PILA as well as DELA Martinus AMSTELVEEN will fight for the last playoff ticket of Pool D.
