TREVISO WINS AGAIN, MARICHAL IN DANGER ZONE
Indesit European Champions' League 2005/06
Luxembourg, December 9, 2005. On the final
day of the fifth leg in the Indesit European Champions’ League 2005/06,
the two Italian men’s teams Sisley TREVISO and EMU RPA PERUGIA kept the
upper hand against Belgian Noliko MAASEIK, respectively BOT Skra
BELCHATOW from Poland. In the women’s competition French RC CANNES overthrew Uralochka NTMK EKATERINBURG in straight sets, whilst Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA (ITA) beat TENERIFE Marichal (ESP) and Azerrail BAKU (AZE) defeated Calisia KALISZ (POL).
EMU RPA PERUGIA (ITA) vs. BOT Skra BELCHATOW (POL) 3:2 (25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 18-25, 15-13)
Best scorers: Mariusz Wlazly (BOT Skra BELCHATOW/23 points), Michal
Winiarski (BOT Skra BELCHATOW/20 points), Martin Lebl (EMU RPA
PERUGIA/20 points)
Match of the day in the men’s competition was definitely the clash between Pool D favourites EMU RPA PERUGIA and BOT Skra BELCHATOW. Although the Italians dominated the first two sets, the Poles came back to level 2:2. However, it didn’t suffice to win the close tiebreak. With this victory PERUGIA has drawn level on points with POOL D first ranked Lokomotiv BELGOROD and with current third BOT Skra BELCHATOW, promising exciting matches in the second half of the League Round.
RC CANNES (FRA) vs. Uralochka NTMK EKATERINBURG (RUS) 3:0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21)
CANNES had reasons to worry because they weren't certain of the Cuban
players that EKATERINBURG brought over. The majority of actions were in
fact succeeded by Yumilka Ruiz and Nancy Carrillo, in attack as well as
in block. However, this was not sufficient to resist CANNES. On the one
hand the Russian team played good tactics, had an efficient reception
and a well organised attack, but CANNES head coach Yan Fang always came
up with the right answer.
TENERIFE Marichal (ESP) vs. Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA (ITA) 0:3 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21)
Best scorers: Virginie de Carne (TENERIFE Marichal /24 points), Dorota Swieniewicz (Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA /17 points)
The Spanish champion suffered their fourth defeat, this time against
Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA with the Italians proving to be the leader of
Pool B beating their opponent team in straight sets. TENERIFE knew this
was one of their last chances to reach the second spot in Pool B, but
it seemed too much pressure for the team that is not doing as well this
year as it has in recent years. The squad coached by Mauro Masacci had
their chance in the first set, but PERUGIA was better and/or more
fortunate at the end. This was probably the key to the final Italian
success with TENERIFE finding it difficult to come back on court up
until the end of the game.
The Spanish from the Canary Island will now have to win almost all
of their remaining matches in order to stand a chance of qualifying to
the next round.
Mauro Masacci was a little bit upset at the end of the match, since
his team didn’t take the opportunity to win the first set. “It would
have changed the fate of the match”, he declared. The coach also stated
that Yelena Pavlova “did not play well which wasn’t good for the team.”
PERUGIA coach Massimo Barbolini was “happy” at the end of the meeting
and he stated that “it is very important for PERUGIA to win against one
of the best teams in Europe”, meaning TENERIFE Marichal.
