ITALIAN TEAMS REMAIN LEADERS

Women's Indesit European Champions' League 2005/06

Luxembourg, December 9, 2005. The two Italian participants in the women’s Indesit European Champions’ League remain League Round leaders after five of the ten legs in the preliminary phase have been completed. In Pool A, defending champion Foppapedretti BERGAMO won the tough match against Spanish Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS 3:2, securing first spot, whilst Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA nailed Spanish TENERIFE Marichal in straight sets, being co-leader in Pool B together with Azerrail BAKU from Azerbaijan.
 

In Pool A, Foppapedretti BERGAMO is almost sure of reaching the next round of the Indesit European Champions’ League. So far, the Italian team has only experienced a demanding match against Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS, the surprise of this season’s competition. The defending champion finally claimed their fifth straight victory after coming back from trailing 1:2 to take the fourth and fifth set fairly easily against the Spanish opponent.
Rosangela Correia, the Brazilian player of the Spanish formation, was the best scorer with 23 points. For Foppapedretti BERGAMO, German Angelina Grün scored 20 points.
French RC CANNES is currently second after winning 3:0 against Russian Uralochka NTMK EKATERINBURG. The two-time Indesit European Champions’ League champion played a steady match and climbed up to the second position in Pool A.

Pool B is a more open group, as four teams will fight for three spots in the play-off round. Italian Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA did a good job by winning the difficult away match against former champion TENERIFE Marichal from Spain 3:0. Although the Spanish team didn’t win a set, the match was extremely tight. Virginie de Carne, the Belgian left-handed spiker of TENERIFE Marichal, was the best scorer with 24 points.
Azerrail BAKU from Azerbaijan joined Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA at the top of Pool B after a surprising 3:1 victory in Poland over Calisia KALISZ. Natalya Mammadova guided her team to victory scoring 30 points.

Action in the women’s Indesit European Champions’ League continues on Tuesday, when the second half will start with the six return matches of this week.
