SISLEY TREVISO KEEPS UNDEFEATED STATUS

Men's Indesit European Champions' League 2005/06

Luxembourg, December 9, 2005. Halfway through the League Round of the men’s Indesit European Champions’ League, only one of the twenty participants has managed to win all four matches. Italian Sisley TREVISO, who have been trying for the title for many years, are the only undefeated team left in the strongest club competition.

Sisley TREVISO defeated Belgian Noliko MAASEIK 3:1 in this week’s Pool C action in the Indesit European Champions’ League. The Italian favourite dropped merely the third set in front of over 3’500 fans in the Expodroom in Belgian Bree. Although Noliko MAASEIK had a chance to level the match in the fourth set, an attack mistake by star Robert Horstink handed the victory over to the Italians.

In other fifth leg action, Italian EMU RPA PERUGIA ended the winning stretch of Polish BOT Skra BELCHATOW in a Pool D thriller. The Italian formation was close to a straight set victory after winning the first two sets, but the Polish champion showed that they weren’t keen on losing their first match in the Indesit European Champions’ League (2:2). Still, the Poles finally had to admit defeat when EMU RPA PERUGIA claimed the tiebreak 15-13.
Polish spiker Marius Wlazly was the best scorer with 23 points. His teammate Michal Winiarski and EMU RPA PERUGIA’s Czech spiker Martin Lebl both scored 20 points.
“I’m satisfied, as this is the first fifth set match we have won in front of our own fans”, stated EMU RPA PERUGIA coach Massimo Caponeri, “Our attack kept us alive today.” “After losing the third and fourth set, we reacted very well”, EMU RPA PERUGIA captain and setter Paolo Tofoli added.

Following these results, three teams are the co-leaders in Pool D, all having won three matches and having lost one. Besides EMU RPA PERUGIA and BOT Skra BELCHATOW, former two-time champion Lokomotiv BELGOROD from Russia sneaked into the top three. The Russian rockets defeated Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka from Serbia & Montenegro 3:2. All three teams have won three matches, losing one clash each.
Russian attacker and former Indesit European Champions’ League MVP Sergey Tetyukhin was the best scorer in this match with 24 points. “We are glad that we won one difficult match, especially because Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka played at such a high level”, analysed Sergey Lazurkin, who was coaching Lokomotiv BELGOROD during this match.

In Pool A, Greek Iraklis THESSALONIKI took over the lead from Dutch rookie Ortec ROTTERDAM Nesselande, who had a week off. In Pool B, Russian Dinamo MOSCOW joined defending champions TOURS VB from France on first spot, both recording a 3-1 win/lose record.

Action in the men’s Indesit European Champions’ League continues next week with the eight return matches of the fifth leg League Round scheduled for the sixth leg. Only the best three teams of each group will qualify for the play-off round.
