NESTEA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL 2006 IN THE NETHERLANDS

Nestea European Championship Tour 2006

Luxembourg/Zurich/The Hague, November 9, 2005. This year’s Beach Volleyball season was very promising for the Dutch teams, in particular the performance of Rebecca Kadijk and Merel Mooren won the silver medal of the 100’000 Euro Turkish Open 2005 on Cleopatra Beach in Alanya (TUR) and were runner-up of the Nestea European Championship Final in Moscow (RUS). In order to continue and encourage the upward trend of this past summer, the Dutch Volleyball Federation (NeVoBo) aims to invest further efforts.

This was made clear at a media conference on Tuesday, 8th November 2005 in The Hague (NED) in presence of the president of the Dutch Volleyball Federation (NeVoBo) Mr. Hans Nieukerke, the deputy mayor of The Hague Mr. Wilbert Stolte, the managing director of Global Sports Marketing Mr. Christian Scholbrock, as well as the director of Free Time Promotion Mr. Frank van Overeem.

The most important news for the over 50 accredited media representatives was the official announcement that in the coming year The Hague will be hosting the Nestea European Championship Final 2006 from 24th to 27th August. “Den Haag”, as it is known to the Dutch, is thus the fourth city, following Alanya (2003), Timmendorfer Strand (2004), and Moscow (2005), to host this prestigious tournament.

Organising the Nestea European Championship Final is part of an ambitious concept that NeVoBo president Hans Nieukerke outlined in The Hague. The long-term strategy is to ensure that Beach Volleyball in the Netherlands (1996 Olympic gold medallist in men’s indoor volleyball) will fortify its position among the world’s elite for a long time to come. “Our goal is to establish our top teams among the top eight at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and maybe even win a medal”, Nieukerke stated. In addition, the Netherlands also want to continue their success story in Europe. Nieukerke declared that he aims to seize a medal with his top teams at a minimum of eight tournaments of the Nestea European Championship Tour until 2008.

In order to achieve these goals a central training programme will be installed in which the country’s top teams will train together in Indoor Beach Volleyball facilities during the winter months. Wilbert Stolte, deputy mayor of The Hague, was pleased to have been entrusted with the hosting of the Nestea European Championship Final 2006 in The Hague: Such a high level event “fits in very well with our top sports strategy, with which we want to promote the city of The Hague”. The central summer programme will take place on the beach mainly. A permanent beach stadium will be erected in Scheveningen, where the continent’s best Beach Volleyball pros will also crown their European Champions.

Christian Scholbrock, managing director of the Zurich based agency Global Sports Marketing which organises and markets the Nestea European Championship Tour, is thankful for the “extraordinary effort of our Dutch partners. The Netherlands is one of the classic Volleyball Powerhouses. We have been asked to come here with the Nestea European Championship Tour a number of times and we are very pleased that the financial and organisational foundations have now been established to make this happen.”
