NOVICE BELCHATOW WITH THIRD CONSECUTIVE VICTORY
Men's Indesit European Champions' League 2005/06
Luxembourg, November 9, 2005. On the second
day of the fourth leg in the men’s Indesit European Champions’ League
2005/06 Belgian Knack Randstad ROESELARE beat last year’s runner-up
Iraklis THESSALONIKI from Greece in thrilling five sets in Pool A,
whilst in Pool D two-time IECL titleholder Lokomotiv BELGOROD from
Russia beat Bulgarian Levski Siconco SOFIA in straight sets and Polish
BOT Skra BELCHATOW have taken over the top position in Pool D after
claiming a 3:1 victory over Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka from Serbia
& Montenegro.
Knack Randstad ROESELARE (BEL) vs. Iraklis THESSALONIKI (GRE) 3:2 (29-27, 25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 25-23)
Best scorers: Ivan Contreras (Knack Randstad ROESELARE/ 29 points), Stanley Clayton (Iraklis THESSALONIKI/ 25 points)
Knack Randstad ROESELARE started rather surprisingly
with Tomas Rubacek. Captain Ivan Contreras was outstanding during the
first set but also Matej
Cernic kept scoring for Iraklis THESSALONIKI. At the end, the
home squad managed to take the 1:0 lead. Setter Frank Depestele varied his game a
lot during the second set. At 16-16 the home middle-blockers Ivan
Marquez and Sergiu Stancu deomnstrated their talent, advancing
ROESELARE from 20-18 to 25-19.
Although the Belgians took a 17-12 lead in the third set, the Greeks
varied their attacks and came back point by point (21-21). At the end
of the set US American Stanley Clayton made the difference in serving
his team to 22-25. After 6-6- in the fourth, Iraklis THESSALONIKI
showed their best. Stanley Clayton, captain Andrej Kravarik and Thomas
Hoff led their team from 8-12 to 16-23, forcing a fifth set (18-25).
The
tiebreak kept close (11-11, 13-13, 14-14, 17-17, 20-20, 23-23) before
the home team finally managed to take their seventh match ball after two and a half hours of play for a
25-23 tiebreak victory!
Understandably disappointed after this defeat, the Greeks didn't show up at the subsequent press conference.
Lokomotiv BELGOROD (RUS) vs. Levski Siconco SOFIA (BUL) 3:0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-15)
Best scorers: Sergey Tetyukhin (Lokomotiv BELGOROD/13 points),
Alexander Kosarev (Lokomotiv BELGOROD/10 points), Boyan Yordanov
(Levski Siconco SOFIA/10 points)
In Pool D Gennady Shipulin’s team started the match nervously (5-8,
15-16). Managing to defend a set point against them at 23-24 thanks to
a service error by Krasimir Gaydarski, the Russians went on profiting
from an attack error by Bulgarian Boyan Yordanov before Lokomotiv’s
captain Sergey Tetyukhin finished the set with a successful attack
(26-24).
In the second and third set the BELGOROD “lions” seemed much more at
ease on court with Arkady Kozlov, Vadim Khamuttskikh, Roman Danilov and
Sergey Tetyukhin serving aces, Alexander Kosarev and Alejandro Spajic
attacking powerfully and Alexey Verbov being effective in reception and
defence.
Although host blocker Arkady Kozlov injured his knee during the third
set, BELGOROD still managed to end the game in straight sets.
BOT Skra BELCHATOW (POL) vs. Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka
(SCG) 3:1 (25-22, 25-21, 26-28, 25-19)
Best scorers: Mariusz Wlazly (BOT Skra BELCHATOW/23
points), Michal Winiarski (BOT Skra BELCHATOW/22 points), Kemal
Seceragic (Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka/18 points)
The new Pool D leader, however, is Polish BOT Skra
BELCHATOW, one of the newcomers to the IECL. Continuing their winning
streak, not having lost a match so far, the Polish champion beat
Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka from Serbia & Montenegro in four sets.
“We are extremely happy with the third consecutive victory”, commented
team captain Andrzej Stelmach, “We expected this match to be difficult
and so it was. The Serbia Montenegrin team played
very well, but we were able to win the most important points.” The
score was tight throughout the match. Although host player Robert
Szczerbaniuk sprained his ankle during the third set, he came back in
the fourth, helping his team mates to record their third victory.“
“We deserved to win one set and I am happy we took the third”, stated
PODGORICKA’s coach Igor Kolakovic, “We are not enough experienced to
win such a match. BOT Skra are simply
stronger than us despite that we played the best match of the season.
The Polish players are extremely strong in reception, especially Michal
Winiarski and Krzysztof Ignaczak. We didn’t do as well in reception.”
The matches of the men’s fourth leg continue tomorrow (Thursday, 10th November) with Unicaja ALMERIA vs. Ortec ROTTERDAM Nesselande, Olympiacos PIRAEUS vs. TOURS VB, VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN vs. volleyball.cz KLADNO and Sisley TREVISO vs. aon hotVolleys VIENNA.
The women’s Indesit European Champions’ League will continue on Tuesday, 29th
November 2005 with the fourth leg matches.
