CANNES UNLUCKY IN THIRD TIEBREAK OF COMPETITION
Men's Indesit European Champions' League 2005/06
Luxembourg, November 9, 2005. On the first day of the fourth leg in the men’s Indesit European Champions’ League 2005/06 Noliko MAASEIK from Belgium defeated French champion AS CANNES in five sets.
AS CANNES (FRA) vs. Noliko MAASEIK (BEL) 2:3 (22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 13-15)
Best scorers: Robert Horstink (Noliko MAASEIK/28 points), Frédéric Gibert and Ondrej Hudecek (AS CANNES/both 18 points)
It was a tight match with the better end for the Belgians, mainly
thanks to Robert Horstink who scored 28 points from powerful serves and
unstoppable spikes.
“This is an important win for us tonight”, said Noliko’s head coach
Anders Kristiansson, “In this pool all is open, so it was necessary to
achieve a good result in Cannes. Nevertheless, we were lucky in the
fourth set because they made a lot of critical mistakes.” MAASEIK’s
spiker Robert Horstink complimented his team: “My colleagues gave me
good balls from which I was able to perform clean spikes. Following our
defeat against DÜREN this victory was mentally very valuable.”
Laurent Tillie, head coach from CANNES: “I’m disappointed because it
was an important match and we lost it, opposing an overwhelming
Horstink.” French captain Loïc Le Marrec was in the same state of mind,
stating: “We were close to finish but we have a lack of confidence. I’m
frustrated.” “They have a great team with a powerful spiker and a fast
setter, therefore it wasn’t easy for us.”
The next game for CANNES in Pool C will be against evivo DÜREN on 7th December 2005.
The matches of the men’s fourth leg continue today (Wednesday, 9thNovember) with Knack Randstad ROESELARE vs. Iraklis THESSALONIKI, BOT Skra BELCHATOW vs. Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka, Lokomotiv BELGOROD vs. Levski Siconco SOFIA and tomorrow (Thursday, 10th November) with Unicaja ALMERIA vs. Ortec ROTTERDAM Nesselande, Olympiacos PIRAEUS vs. TOURS VB, VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN vs. volleyball.cz KLADNO and Sisley TREVISO vs. aon hotVolleys VIENNA.
The women’s Indesit European Champions’ League will continue on Tuesday, 29th November with the fourth leg matches.
