Indesit European Champions' League 2005/06
Luxembourg, November 2, 2005. On the second day of the 3rd
leg in the men’s Indesit European Champions’ League 2005/06 Polish BOT
Skra BELCHATOW seized their second consecutive victory beating Levski
Siconco SOFIA from Bulgaria in four sets. Their Pool D contender EMU RPA PERUGIA from Italy overthrew Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka
(SCG) in straight sets. In Pool C evivo DÜREN (GER) beat Belgian Noliko
MAASEIK 3:1, whilst 2004/05 IECL runner-up Iraklis THESSALONIKI (GRE)
secured a straight set win over Hypo Tirol INNSBRUCK from Austria. In
the women’s third leg matches in Pool A Spanish Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS
booked their third victory in a row beating Turkish Eczacibasi ISTANBUL
in five sets, whilst Russia’s Uralochka NTMK EKATERINBURG celebrated
their first victory. In Pool B’s top match Italian Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA secured a straight set win over Turkish Günes Vakifbank ISTANBUL.

Having defeated Lokomotiv BELGOROD 3:1 in their first match at
home, the Poles continued with a 3:1 away victory over Levski Siconco
SOFIA from Bulgaria. Although the Bulgarian home team took the first
set (25-23), the Poles became stronger and more self confident, taking
over a 2:1 set lead. Leading throughout the fourth set (8-5, 16-14,
19-17) the Bulgarians committed four consecutive errors followed by
block points in favour of the Poles and a final attck by Mariusz Wlazly
(23-25).
Andrey Zhekov, captain of Levski Siconco, explained the defeat due to a
higher level of nervosity than their opponents: “However, if we
continue playing this way, I believe we’ll achieve further victories.”
”We didn’t manage to close the fourth set which is due to the lack of
experience of our players”, added head coach Martin Stoev.
On the other side BELCHATOW’s team captain Andrzej Stelmach was glad to
have achieved a victory away: “I think that the game in the centre
brought us the victory. Each victory as a visiting team is a precious
one, so I am very glad.” Head coach Ireneusz Mazur added: “At the
beginning we didn’t serve well and our play wasn’t convincing, but we
played more confidently at attack near the end, so I think we deserved
this victory.”
Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka (SCG) vs. EMU RPA PERUGIA (ITA) 0:3 (19-25, 15-25, 21-25)
Best scorers: Sebastian Swiderski (EMU RPA PERUGIA/12 points), Kemal Seceragic (Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka/9 points)
EMU
RPA PERUGIA booked the second consecutive victory in the Indesit
European Champions’ League defeating Buducnost PODGORICKA Banka in
straight sets in front of 3’000 spectators.
“There was too big a difference in quality between the two teams”,
declared PODGORICKA’s head coach Igor Kolakovic after the match,
“PERUGIA own easily because we showed topo much respect.” “It was
obvious that the home team was under pressure”, stated guest head coach
Piero Molducci, “We made fewer mistakes and were better in serving and
reception.”
Noliko
MAASEIK (BEL) vs. evivo DÜREN (GER) (25-19, 35-37, 21-25, 22-25)
Iraklis THESSALONIKI
(GRE) vs. Hypo Tirol INNSBRUCK
(AUT) 3:0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23)
Eczacibasi
ISTANBUL (TUR) vs. Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS (ESP) 2:3 (25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 17-25, 13-15)
Best scorers: Stacey Gordon (Eczacibasi ISTANBUL/16 points), Rosangela Correia (Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS/15 points)
Having already lost their first two matches against the favourites
of Pool A, Eczacibasi ISTANBUL now faced Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS who
count two consecutive wins over CAT TROFA and Uralochka NTMK
EKATERINBURG.
Under the impulse of Canadian Stacey Gordon Eczacibasi seized the first
two sets easily (25-20, 25-21). But LAS PALMAS became more aggressive
and determined, forcing a tiebreak. Leading throughout, the guests from
the Canary Island finally booked the 3:2 victory away.
Uralochka NTMK EKATERINBURG (RUS) vs. CAT TROFA (POR) 3:0 (29-27, 25-18, 25-16)
Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA
(ITA) vs. Günes Vakifbank ISTANBUL
(TUR) 3:0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-20)
Best scorers: Mirka Francia (Pallavolo Sirio PERUGIA/19 points), Neslihan Demir (Günes Vakifbank ISTANBUL/17 points)
The host team showed no respect towards PERUGIA but were
unfortunately never able to take advantage of their lead. Mistakes on
their own side or the tremendous smashes by Mirka Francia, Senna Usic
and Dorota Swieniewicz kept the team coached by Volodymyr Buzayev
chanceless. “We didn’t know what to expect”, stated Italian head coach
Massimo Barbolini after the match, “We did have some problems on court
and I think we are able to play better. Brazilian setter Hélia Rogério
de Souza proved to be one of the best players on court.”
