DIFFICULT WIN FOR TOURS VB
Men's Indesit European Champions' League 2005/06
Luxembourg, November 2, 2005. On the first day of the 3rd leg in the Men’s Indesit European Champions’ League 2005/06 defending champion TOURS VB from France struggled to beat Russia’s Dinamo MOSCOW in five sets in Pool B, whilst Dutch Ortec ROTTERDAM Nesselande seized a tight straight set victory over Knack Randstad ROESELARE from neighbouring Belgium in Pool A.

Vladimir Nikolov and Serbia Montenegrin Slobodan Boskan, TOURS advance
to a 1:0 lead after 26 minutes.
At 17-16 and after setter Sergey Makarov comes into play, MOSCOW leads
for the first time (16-17). However, thanks to Nikolov’s serves the
score turns into the host team favour (21-19) but it’s MOSCOW who
finally win the set following a successful block by Bulgarian Matey
Kaziyski and Andrey Egorchev (39-37). As a consequence, TOURS start off
the third set weakly (5-8, 8-12, 14-16) finally losing it 20-25, but
kick off better in the fourth (8-5, 11-7, 14-9) which they claim 25-18.
In the deciding tiebreak Hichem Guemmadi and Slobodan Boskan score for
TOURS’ lead (4-2) followed by a huge block by Canadian Jason Haldane
(6-3). MOSCOW take over control shortly after a few substitutions
(8-9), but TOURS break again (12-10). Egorchev serves “out” and Nikolov
aces, securing the 3:2 victory for the 2004/05 titleholder (15-12).
Vladimir Nikolov (MVP of 2004/05 IECL Final Four) was the best scorer
of the match with 21 points followed by Matey Kaziyski with 16 points.
Best blockers were Alexander Volkov (Dinamo MOSCOW/5 blocks) and Jason
Haldane (TOURS VB) who scored 3 points from block.
Following two defeats (of which one unlucky five set defeat against Hypo Tirol INNSBRUCK) the Dutch from Ortec ROTTERDAM Nesselande, runner-up of the Austrian Airlines Top Teams Cup 2004/05, finally landed a victory, taking over top spot in Pool A being the only team who has completed three matches. In especially Allan van de Loo and Kristian van der Wel (best scorer of the match with 21 points) demonstrated an improved performance compared to the last two matches.
”The moves that didn’t work in the match against INNSBRUCK, worked today”, explained ROTTERDAM’s head coach Peter Blangé after the match, “Moreover, Allan van de Loo performed unexpectedly well. All in all we were a little more stable than in the first duels.” Captain Marko Klok who also played a good match described the encounter against ROESELARE as “the best IECL match so far”: “We have shown a high level from the beginning up until the end.”
Assistant coach Bart Hungenaert, who replaced Dominique Baeyens at the press conference, recognized: “We had analysed ROTTERDAM’s previous matches, but we had no idea how well Nesselande can play when they obtain their best level. They played strong in defense and were correctly organized. Compliments to Peter Blangé!”
Match play continues Wednesday and Thursday with three women’s third leg matches joining the four men’s clashes today.
