PIRAEUS AND TREVISO SUCCESSFUL IN TIEBREAK

Indesit European Champions League 2005/06

Luxembourg, October 27, 2005. On the last day of the second leg League Round in the Indesit European Champions’ League 2005/06 Olympiacos PIRAEUS beat VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN 3:2 in the men’s Pool B, whereas in Pool C Sisley TREVISO overcame AS CANNES in a tiebreak set.
In the women’s competition RC CANNES kept the upper hand against CAT TROFA (3:0), whilst Calisia KALISZ beat Mladost ZAGREB by the same score.

Last year’s Austrian Airlines Top Teams Cup champion Olympiacos PIRAEUS from Greece started the Indesit European Champions’ League with grace, beating last year’s IECL fourth VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN in five sets. Winning the first set after a shaky start (25-21) Olympiacos trailed 18-22 in the second before the home team’s head coach Radovan Malevic sent Lorenzo Bernardi on court. Although the Italian star didn’t touch the ball for several rallies, PIRAEUS caught up nonetheless before Bernardi scored two decisive points to tie the score at 23-23. Defending one set point against them Olympiacos finally seized the set 29-27 on their third set point, setting the foundation for a seemingly comfortable straight-set victory. However, not being able to take one of their two match points in the third set, the hosts allowed the Germans to come back into the game (25-27). Leading throughout the fourth set VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN successfully managed to force a tiebreak (22-25).
Fighting bravely the German team coached by Stelian Moculescu caught up a Greek four point lead (8-4), leveling to 11-11. At 14-12 Olympiacos failed again twice to claim the match (14-14), but eventually took the 18-16 victory.
It was Olympiacos’ first match in the competition this season, whereas VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN have played and lost twice, last week against Dinamo MOSCOW (2:3).

AS CANNES (FRA) vs. Sisley TREVISO (ITA) 2:3 (25-19, 22-25, 15-25, 25-23, 12-15)

On the italian side, center Gustavo Endres and spiker Samuele Papi perfomed excellently, contributing to the win of the second and third set (25-22, 25-15). Errors on attack by TREVISO presented the fourth set to CANNES, so that the match had to be decided in a tiebreak. A series of good serves by Endres at 11-11 finally decided the tiebreak in Sisley's favour, one week after having beaten German evivo DÜREN in a tiebreak encounter.
"He's an awesome player scoring three points on serve in the tiebreak", commented CANNES' center Frédéric Gibert on Gustavo Endres, "We were close to a surprise but we weren't positive enough thinking about a win." "It was a tight game of a very high level", described AS CANNES head coach Laurent Tillie, "Although we managed to win the fourth set, experience and physical condition spoke for TREVISO."
“We faced difficulties playing our volley at the beginning of the match”, commented Italian head coach Daniele Bagnoli, "Further, we committed unnecessary mistakes during the second and third set. It was important to win tonight."

 

In the women’s event the two favourites RC CANNES (FRA) from Pool A and Calisia KALISZ (POL) from Pool B both booked straight set victories. Two-time IECL titleholder RC CANNES beat CAT TROFA (POR) away and Calisia KALISZ profited from the home crowd support against Croatian Mladost ZAGREB.
