EIGHT YOUTH GIRLS' TEAMS BATTLE FOR GOLD

European Youth Olympic Festival 2005

The Italian youth girls' team Luxembourg/Lignano, July 05, 2005. In the eighth summer edition of the European Youth Olympic Festival, which is taking place in Lignano Sabbiadoro (ITA) from 4th to 8th July 2005, the youth girls from France and Italy were top of the pools following the first round of matches but with another two rounds to play everything still remains open.

The two first ranked teams in Pool A and Pool B from a total of eight participating teams, namely Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia, will move on to the crossed semifinal matches which will take place on Thursday afternoon. The Italian youth girls, who finished third in the European Youth Championships 2005 in Tallinn (EST) earlier this year, experienced little problems in their first match against Slovakia (3:0) being backed up by the support of the home crowd. Best scorer was Italian Francesca Manfredini booking 15 points.

The other Pool A encounter between the Eastern Europeans Poland and the Czech Republic resulted in a tighter affair which the Poles finally decided in their favour, winning the tiebreak 15-10.

In Pool B France stormed through their first match beating their neighbours from Belgium 3:0 after just over an hour of play. In the other encounter 2003 European Youth Champion Croatia just overcame the Dutch 15-13 in the tiebreak. Although Van der Velde (23 points) and Schoot (22 points) scored several points for the Netherlands, the opposition capped the best scorer’s table with Jelena Alajbeg (best server of the European Youth Championships 2005) and Hana Cutura scoring 29 respectively 24 points in total.
