ITALY, CROATIA, POLAND AND THE NETHERLANDS QUALIFY
European Youth Olympic Festival 2005
Luxembourg/San Giorgio di Nogaro, July 07, 2005. In the eighth summer edition of the European Youth Olympic Festival, which is taking place in San Giorgio di Nogaro (ITA) from 4th to 8th July 2005, the national youth girls’ team from Croatia will meet two-times winner Poland in the first semifinal, whilst the Netherlands will challenge hosts Italy in the other semifinal encounter. The two first ranked teams in Pool A and Pool B from a total of eight participating teams, namely Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia, have moved on to the crossed semifinal matches which will take place on Thursday afternoon.
The Italian youth girls, who finished third in the European Youth Championships 2005 in Tallinn (EST) earlier this year, experienced little problems in their three pool matches conceding only one set against Poland. Beating the Czech Republic in their final pool match in straight sets the Italians secured the top pool position with four points ahead of Poland, the Czech Republic (both 3 points) and Slovakia (2 points). Poland managed to qualify as second best team after beating Slovakia 3:0, overtaking the Czechs who dropped down to third place.
Winning all of their matches in Pool B 2003 European Youth Girls’ Champion Croatia will be the opponent of the Poles in the first semifinal of the day. Losing their first match against the final pool leader Croatia in a tight tiebreak the Dutch team went on beating Belgium (3:1) and France (3:0) in order to qualify for the semifinal round, where they will now face hosts Italy.
The classification matches for places 5 to 8 will also be played in a crossed competition format where the Czech Republic face Belgium and France comes against Slovakia.
