BELGOROD THRASHES TREVISO 3:0

Men's Indesit European Champions' League 2004/05

Sergey Baranov (Lokomotiv BELGOROD) serving Luxembourg, March 3, 2005. After French PARIS Volley and VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN from Germany succeeded to book away victories in the home match round of the final playoffs of the Men’s Indesit European Champions’ League 2004/05, Italian Sisley TREVISO were without chance in Belgorod, Russia exiting the court after a 3:0 thrashing by the home team Lokomotiv BELGOROD.

The last time these two top European clubs met was in 1999 during the League Round of the same competition, where Sisley TREVISO kept the upper hand booking a straight set victory. This time, however, the 4’800 spectators in the Cosmos Sport Palace witnessed the demise of the Italian guest team. Dominating Sisley in every aspect (53 total points vs. 22, 9 aces vs. 1, 10 blocks vs. 2, 34 successful attacks vs. 19), the ‘black lions’ finished the match in three clear sets, lasting just over an hour. Sergey Tetyukhin (12 points), Sergey Baranov (12) and Alexander Kosarev (10) were the leading trio in BELGOROD’s line-up whilst Alessandro Fei scored the most points (7) for Sisley TREVISO.
“This match was extremely important for the team”, stated Lokomotiv’s head coach Gennady Shipulin after the match, “but because we prepared for it thoroughly, analysing every little detail, we came out as the winning team. I am extremely pleased with my players and today’s game.” Valerio Vermiglio mentioned that Sisley found no solution to the host formation’s serve and aggressive attacking play. In addition, the Italians weren’t sufficiently calm so that several unforced errors allowed the Russians to pull through their own game.

The teams are now preparing for the second match on Thursday, 10 March 2005 in Italy, where TREVISO will be under enormous pressure because the two times defending champion Lokomotiv BELGOROD will need to win only one more set in order to snatch the ticket to the Final Four in Thessaloniki from 26-27 March 2005.
