VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN OVERCOMES MAASEIK IN A TIEBREAK

Men's Indesit European Champions' League 2004/05

Matias Raymaekers (Noliko MAASEIK) spiking, Georg Wiebel and Jochen Schöps (VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN) on block Luxembourg, March 3, 2005. Following PARIS Volley’s away victory yesterday (3:1 against TOURS VB) during the home match round of the final playoffs of the Men’s Indesit European Champions’ League 2004/05, German VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN defeated host team Noliko MAASEIK (BEL) in a tiebreak set.

Having already played each other during the League Round of the Indesit European Champions’ League 2004/05, where both teams booked 3:1 home victories, the German guests at the Expodroom in Bree, Belgium managed to overcome the pressure of the 3’200 fans, beating the home favourites 15-10 in the tiebreak set.
The serve was a crucial factor during the first set. With strong serves from both sides the score kept tight (5-4, 5-8, 12-13, 22-23) but eight missed serves by Noliko MAASEIK allowed FRIEDRICHSHAFEN to take the first set (23-25). There was not much the Belgians could do in the second set as the guest squad proved simply too strong with Elvis Contreras, Jochen Schöps and setter Robert Koch playing extremely well (6-8, 14-17, 18-25). However, Hannes Brinkborg and Jan-Willem Roex helped Noliko to take the lead in the third set (13-10), which they maintained successfully (22-17) in order to reduce the Germans’ advantage to only one set 1:2.
The game experienced a turn when MAASEIK went on dominating the fourth set (14-9, 16-11) with a stable setter Mikko Esko as well as Jan-Willem Roex and Matias Raymaekers performing strong on block. Following a close end score (22-21), the set finally finished in Noliko’s favour (25-22) so that the tiebreak had to decide.
More aggressive and determined than their opponents at the beginning of the fifth set, FRIEDRICHSHAFEN secured a commanding lead, which they never relinquished (10-15). “Although we caught up from 0:2, we had the chance to win the game at 2:2. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to win the deciding fifth set though”, commented Noliko MAASEIK after the game.
