TWO 3:0 THRASHINGS
Women's Indesit European Champions League 2004/05
Luxembourg, February 10, 2005. In the remaining two home matches of the Women’s Indesit European Champions League 2004/05 playoff round, Foppapedretti BERGAMO (ITA) and RC CANNES (FRA) kept the upper hand against Besiktas ISTANBUL (TUR), respectively Azerrail BAKU (AZE).Following Italian Sant’Orsola Asystel NOVARA’s tough away defeat against Spanish Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS on Wednesday, the other strong Italian team, Foppapedretti BERGAMO, overthrew Besiktas ISTANBUL from Turkey in three clear sets. Finishing fourth in the League Round the Turkish team from ISTANBUL wasn’t expected to beat the Italian favourite who stormed through the pool rounds conceding but one match. In less than one hour the guests were virtually swept off the court, scoring a maximum of 16 points in the third set. Next Wednesday, 16th February 2005 Besiktas will have a tough time at home if they want to keep BERGAMO from qualifying for the Final Four, where the winner will oppose the organising team and defending champion TENERIFE Marichal.
Struggling in the first set (24-24, 26-26) CANNES finally managed to take the 1:0 lead in the André Henry sports hall, which will sadly be closed at the end of the season. With both teams staying close to one another during the second set the home team finished luckier again, securing the final deciding points (25-22). Committing increasing errors BAKU seemed tired but kept on resisting, until CANNES pulled away to win the final third set 25-19.
