DEFENDING CHAMPION TENERIFE MARICHAL BACK IN BUSINESS

Women's Indesit European Champions' League 2004/05

Luxembourg, December 17, 2004. Defending Women’s Indesit European Champions’ League Champion TENERIFE Marichal from Spain faced some problems during the beginning of the world’s strongest club competition. The Spanish formation is back in business after winning against Serbian Crvena Zvezda BEOGRAD (3:0) and takes second place in Pool B now.

Yelena Shabovta (9) and Victoria Ravva (12/RC CANNES) blocking the attack by Maja Poljak (Foppapedretti BERGAMO) The victory was extremely welcome for TENERIFE Marichal, the team that surprisingly won the Indesit European Champions’ League last year. The Spanish formation had already lost twice, so only a victory against Crvena Zvezda BEOGRAD would have helped TENERIFE Marichal to climb in the ranking, this being exactly what happened. The Spanish team won the away match 3:0 and is ranked second now.
Best scorer of the clash was Serbian spiker Ivana Popovic, who made 15 points. For TENERIFE Marichal, three players ended with double figures: Rosangel Correia do Nascimento (14), Yelena Pavlova (12) and Ingrid Visser (11). “I want to play in the Final Four again with this team”, TENERIFE Marichal head coach Jose Francisko Dos Santos said. “But to reach that stage we have to improve our level. I am satisfied with the result of this match.”
All other favourites didn’t make any mistake during the sixth leg of the Women’s Indesit European Champions’ League. In Pool A, Italian Foppapedretti BERGAMO continued their winning streak. This week, the Italian team nailed former champion RC CANNES from France (3:1). In Pool B, Italian Sant’Orsola Asystel NOVARA defeated Azerrail BAKU from Azerbaijan for the second time. The conclusion of these results is that both Italian teams only need one more victory to be sure of reaching the next round.

Play in the Women’s Indesit European Champions’ League continues in January 2005.
