ONLY TWO TEAMS REMAIN UNBEATEN AFTER FIRST HALF

Men's Indesit European Champions League 2004/05

Set and attack by the VIENNA hotVolleys Luxembourg, December 2, 2004. Two of the twenty teams playing in the Men’s European Champions’ League keep their undefeated status halfway through the league round. Only Greek Iraklis THESSALONIKI and Russian Dinamo MOSCOW won all four matches played so far. Whilst the Greek team reached this status last week, the Russian runner-up beat Belgian Knack ROESELARE (3:0) to retain their winning streak.

Dinamo MOSCOW didn’t face any problems with Knack ROESELARE except for during the third set, where the Belgian team came close to their opponent. But Dinamo MOSCOW proved again to be the stronger, winning the Pool D match in three straight sets. Best scorer was Stanislav Dineikine with 18 points. “We didn’t have a lot of information about Knack ROESELARE”, Dinamo MOSCOW coach Boris Kolchin said. “They played well, but I am glad that we were stronger. We want to reach the play-off round as quickly as possible.” “Dinamo MOSCOW is definitely the strongest team of our group”, Knack ROESELARE coach Dominique Baeyens stated. “But as we are fighting for the second place in this pool, I am disappointed that we couldn’t secure the third set.”
The Aon hotVolleys VIENNA from Austria surprisingly lost their first match of this season’s Indesit European Champions’ League. In Sofia Bulgarian Levski Siconco SOFIA took advantage of the Austrian champion’s performance gap by taking the Pool B clash 3:0, opening up possibilities to the other teams in this group to qualify for the playoffs. PARIS Volley from France played an almost perfect match against Italian Copra Volley PIACENZA in Pool D. The former Indesit European Champions’ League champion nailed the Italian favourite in three straight sets. Star on the French side was again Noureddine Hfaiedh who booked 20 points.
One other noteworthy result of the fifth leg of the Indesit European Champions’ League was the victory of Italian Sisley TREVISO over French TOURS VB (3:1). It was the first defeat of the French team, now co-leading Pool C together with Sisley TREVISO. Best scorer was TOURS VB opposite attacker Vladimir Nikolov with 22 points, whilst on the Italian side Alberto Cisolla collected 17 points. “It was tough to win”, Sisley TREVISO head coach Daniele Bagnoli stated. “We desperately needed this victory to climb in the ranking. Now we are able to enter the next matches more confidently.” “The win is really important to us”, Cisolla added. “It shows that the defeat against SCC BERLIN last week was only a one-off. We really want to fight for the first place in this pool.”

Play in the worlds’ strongest club competition continues on Tuesday, when the second stage of the league round starts. The Pool D clash between Copra Volley PIACENZA and PARIS Volley (FRA) promises to be the most exciting match on paper. The best three teams of each league round pool will proceed to the play-off round.
