TENERIFE Marichal AIMING FOR SECOND VICTORY

Women's Indesit European Champions' League 2004/05

Tenerife, Spain, November 24, 2004. TENERIFE Marichal will try to recover self-confidence after their defeat of last week against Azerrail BAKU in Azerbaijan

The Spanish team will face Sant’Orsola Asystel NOVARA, the current leader of Pool B, at 20.00pm local time on Thursday evening. The clash, which will take place in the sports hall Santiago Martin, will be the star match of the women’s third leg main phase. Celebrating straight set victories over Crvena Zvezda BEOGRAD and Calisia Winiary KALISZ the Italian team has not yet lost one set. On the other side the players coached by Chico dos Santos beat Besiktas ISTANBUL 3:0 in the first meeting but then lost to BAKU in five sets, believing that they were unfairly treated by the referee’s rulings. TENERIFE Marichal will line-up its complete selection even though Yelena Pavlova is still restrained with a back injury not being able to train on a regular basis. However, her coaches expect her to be fit for Thursday. NOVARA, who will arrive in TENERIFE tomorrow afternoon, will bring their whole selection, however, Sara Anzanello won’t be able to help her team because she’s still recovering from an injury. The group coached by Angiolino Frigoni is presently in third place of the Italian Championship with six victories out of seven matches, having beaten Reggio EMILIA in the last match in straight sets. TENERIFE Marichal achieved their fifth consecutive triumph last weekend when defeating Universidad de GRANADA (3:1) in the official Spanish competition, retaining the number one spot in the classification table.
Quico Cabrera, president of TENERIFE, said about the meeting against NOVARA that “this is the most challenging match in the main phase and our team will have to play very well to beat the Italians. We hope that our fans will help us achieve our aim as we’re expecting a lot of people to come and support us on Thursday.” The referees for the match between TENERIFE Marichal and Sant’Orsola Asystel NOVARA will be Giuliano Medici from San Marino and Germany’s Frank Garthoff.
