Women's Indesit European Champions League 2004/05

Luxembourg, November 17, 2004. Last year’s bronze medallist RC CANNES from France had to accept their first defeat in the Indesit European Champions League 2004/05 in the second week’s encounter against Turkish Vakifbank Günes ISTANBUL.

The coach of RC CANNES, Yan Fang, wasn’t satisfied with the play of his girls, stating: “We played very bad without any coordination in our team.” Team captain Victoria Ravva was also very disappointed not having expected such a negative final result. The home team on the other side was more than happy with their coach Volodymyr Buzayev commenting: “We have served very well demonstrating our strength and power.” The best player of the match, ISTANBUL’s team captain Aysun Ozbek, agreed, complimenting the effective blocking and defense action of her team. The other Pool A match between Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS (ESP) and Foppapedretti BERGAMO (ITA) was won by the latter in three straight sets.
In Pool B Sant’Orsola Asystel NOVARA from Italy booked a clear set victory over Polish Calisia Winiary KALISZ. Starting the game with a 5-0 lead the home team carried on strong, not allowing their Polish guests to come back anymore (17-5, 25-13). As in the first set Asystel takes another 5-0 lead but this time KALISZ has found the weapons to fight back, drawing the balance at 10-10. Owing to a better defense and organisation within the Polish team the second set is more contested, but again with the better end for NOVARA (25-20). Trapped by the technical superiority of the home team who are alternating between back-row attacks and cross court shots, showing off their whole  repertoire, the Poles had to finally admit a straight set defeat.
