NO SURPRISES IN OPENING WEEK OF WOMEN’S EVENT
Women's Indesit European Champions' League
Luxembourg, November 12, 2004. All the
favourites for the Women’s Indesit European Champions’ League title won
their opening matches when the world’s strongest club competition took
off this week. Defending champion TENERIFE Marichal from Spain, as well as the former champions Foppapedretti
BERGAMO from Italy and French RC CANNES, booked first round victories.
The most exciting match on paper didn’t turn out to be the most spectacular match in reality when Italian Foppapedretti BERGAMO blew former champion Uralochka NTMK EKATERINBURG off the court. The Italian team confirmed its favourite status by winning in three straight sets in the Pool A clash which took place in Russia. Although newly recruited Cuban Zoila Barros from Uralochka EKATERINBURG ended up as the best scorer with 14 points, it was the Italian formation that finally left the court as the winner.
One other noteworthy result in Pool A was the 3-2 away victory by Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS (ESP) against Turkish champion Günes Vakifbank ISTANBUL. Turkish spiker Neslihan Demir was the best player on court with 24 points in a spectacular match witnessed by over 2’000 spectators.
In other Pool A play RC CANNES defeated Stal BIELSKO BIALA from Poland 3-1. Defending champion TENERIFE Marichal had a fairly easy encounter against Turkish Besiktas ISTANBUL (3-0), allowing their new coach Jose Dos Santos, who took over the job from Avital Selinger (now national team coach of the Netherlands) to make use of his complete squad. Other Pool B winners were Sant’Orsola Asystel NOVARA (ITA) and Azerrail BAKU (AZE).
Play continues on Tuesday with two matches of the second leg. The most spectacular matches of the second week will be the confrontations between Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS and Foppapedretti BERGAMO in Pool A as well as between Azerrail BAKU andTENERIFE Marichal in Pool B.
The first three ranked teams of each group will reach the play-off stage of this high level competition.
