RUSSIA REAP GOLD!

Men's Junior European Championships

Silver medallists The Netherlands

Zagreb/Luxembourg, September 12, 2004. In the final of the Men’s Junior European Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, the Russians beat the Netherlands 3:1 to secure the gold.

Struggling against Serbia Montenegro in the semifinal where Russia just won the tiebreak 19:17 the Russian national under-20 squad went on to defeat the Dutch team conceding the third set only. The Netherlands reached the final by eliminating Germany, who finally finished third, in straight sets - as in 2002 when the Germans also captured the bronze. “It was very pleasant working together with this German delegation. We are extremely happy to have won a medal for the second time running”, explained German head coach Michael Warm.
Russia, who finished fourth in the previous edition of the Junior European Championships in 2002, went 2:0 ahead in the final before conceding the third set 23:25. However, in a tight fourth set the Russians finally made everything clear, leaving the “oranjes” with the silver and taking gold home to Russia!

In the Women’s Junior European Championships 2004, Italy won gold, defeating Serbia Montenegro 3:0 in the final in Presov, Slovakia. Russia beat Croatia in straight sets in the bronze medal match. To view the results of the women’s draw please click here.
