Luxembourg/Lausanne, July 5, 2004. The Drawing of Lots ceremony for one of the International Volleyball Federation’s most prestigious events, the 2006 World Volleyball Championships, is due to take place on July 16.
The ceremony will be held at 11.00 in the beautiful Giardino d'Inverno
room in the Westin Excelsior Hotel in Rome (ITA) coinciding with the
opening day of the 2004 World League Finals in Rome. A record number of
174 teams (97 men's and 77 women's teams) from 101 countries have
registered for the event making it the biggest World Championships ever
contested in FIVB history.
All five Confederations are represented as
follows: Twenty four teams from Africa, 33 from Asia, 57 from Europe, 39
from Norceca and 13 from South America. The previous highest entry list
was 118 teams at the 2002 World Championships.
The World
Championships, which are staged every four years, are the FIVB's most
important Volleyball competition as they incorporate a three round
series and playoffs in a process that will determine who progresses to
the final round in Japan which will consist of 24 teams each for men and
women for a total of 48 teams. As hosts, the Japan men's and women's
teams have already qualified for the final 24 along with the defending
2002 world champions, the Brazilian men's and the Italian women's team.
