RUSSIA AND ITALY ACQUIRE LAST-MINUTE TICKET TO THE OLYMPICS

Final Olympic Qualification Tournament

Luxembourg, 17th May 2004. The ladies’ national teams of Italy and Russia have qualified for the Olympic Summer Games in Athens 2004. They will join the already qualified European teams of Greece and Germany .

Italy and Russia are the last two women's European teams to qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens, which will take place during the month of August 2004. At the end of the Olympic Qualification tournament in Tokyo, Japan, where each country played a total of seven matches, Russia and Italy both achieved 12 points, thus trailing behind the host and winner of the tournament, Japan, and the runner-up Korea with 13 points each. Even though Italy beat Russia in the all European encounter (3:2), they had to concede to fourth position behind Russia (rank 3) having lost two sets more in total. The best European team of the tournament surprised in their last match against Japan who was holding the leading position, only needing three sets to achieve victory in front of a sold-out arena seating approximately 10,000 spectators (25:20, 25:18, 25:19).

Between the 21st and the 30th May 2004, the European men’s teams of France, Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain will be provided with an opportunity to qualify for the Summer Games in three separate Olympic Qualifications tournaments for men taking place in Porto (POR), Tokyo (Japan) and Madrid (ESP).
