RUSSIA AND ITALY ON ROUTE TO ATHENS
Final Olympic Qualification Tournament
Luxembourg, 14th May 2004. It looks promising for the Russian and Italian national ladies’ teams who are currently competing in the World Qualification tournament in Tokyo, Japan, for a ticket to the important Olympic Summer Games of Athens, which will take place during the month of August.
After today’s action, both Russia and Italy only have two more matches from a total of seven to play in their last chance to participate in the renowned Olympic Games in Athens 2004. Russia currently holds second position behind Japan having beaten Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Chinese Taipei and Thailand in three straight sets, so far only having to admit defeat against Korea in a tie-break (13:15).
The current number three of the pool Korea also beat the only other
European team in this tournament, Italy, coming back from two sets down
to finally close the tie-break 18:16 in Asian favor. The Italians now
hold rank four having lost two matches out of five (against Korea and
Japan who has not yet lost a match) and are under pressure to win at
least one of the last two rounds facing Russia and Thailand in order to
secure their place at the Olympics. The Russian girls have done well so
far holding the number two spot after five days of play, but the
strongest opponent Japan is yet to come…
