European Championship Tour Final

Zurich/Timmendorfer Strand/Berlin, 15 April 2004: Big honour for the Beach Volleyball Family: German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has assumed the patronage of the European Championship Final to be held from 10-13 June 2004 in Timmendorfer Strand. The official letter from the Chancellors office reads: "It is a pleasure for the Chancellor to assume the patronage for the European Championship Final. He also wishes the organisers continued success with the preparation and the execution of this prestigious tournament."

It still needs to be confirmed whether or not Gerhard Schröder will be able to attend the event on the coast of the Baltic Sea. During the 2002 Women's Indoor World Championship, German President Johannes Rau had attended the opening ceremony in Münster as patron of this 2002 event. The European Championship Final is the highlight of the European Championship Tour 2004, the highest ranked Beach Volleyball tournament series in Europe. In Timmendorfer Strand, the top European 24 men's and women's teams will compete to become European Champion as well as for a piece of the 200,000 Euros in prize money and valuable qualification points for the Olympic Games in Athens.

The German Volleyball Federation DVV features a number of the defending champions: 2003 European Champions, Okka Rau and Stephanie Pohl (both from Kiel) as well as 2003 European Vice Champions Andrea Ahmann and Jana Vollmer (Schmiden/Rottenburg) will be competing in front of their home fans. Markus Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann from Cologne, Germany are the reigning European Vice Champions in the men's bracket.
