Slovenia crown first-ever national Snow Volleyball champions
News from the National Federations

Žiri, Slovenia, March 4, 2018. At the end of a nice Sunday afternoon, Slovenia crowned their first-ever Snow Volleyball national champions. Anže Bahč/Tadej Boženk and Bernarda Baron/Marjeta Grbec claimed the top honours from the men’s and women’s competition respectively, thus securing their participation in the inaugural CEV Snow Volleyball European Championships taking place later this month in Austria.

A total five women’s teams took to the court for the first-ever Snow Volleyball national championship held in Slovenia. Top-seeded Bernarda Baron and Marjeta Grbec did not drop a single set on their way towards seizing the crown. However, some other girls delivered a solid performance as well and eventual vice-champions Jerneja Planinc and Špela Zakšek took silver only after narrowly edging bronze medal winners Tjaša Kikelj and Tjaša Žagar.

Bernarda Baron was obviously satisfied with her performance at the Nordic Centre Žiri: “I usually do not play with Meta, except for some friendly Beach Volleyball tournaments and that is why I am even happier with this title. I am already looking forward to participating in the next Snow Volleyball tournaments, as well as to the CEV European Championship in Wagrain-Kleinarl.”

As many as eight teams joined the men’s competition in the beautiful scenery at the feet of the iconic ski jumping hills in Žiri. After a tough fight in the group stage, Anže Bahč/Tadej Boženk, Denis Robida/Marko Plankelj, Jernej Potočnik/Tomislav Šmuc and Davor Zupancic/ Aljaz Juvancic  progressed to the final four stage. In the first semi-final, Bahč and Boženk outplayed Zupančič and Juvančič by 11-7 and 11-5 and relaxed while waiting for their next opponents. On the other hand, Robida and Plankelj had to fight much harder against the experienced Potočnik and Šmuc, who later claimed the bronze medal, to secure their spot in the ‘grand finale’.

The fans in attendance witnessed some exciting rallies and at the end Bahč/Boženk emerged as the 2018 national champions after a 2-1 (5-11, 11-8, 11-4) win. Boženk was extremely happy with their game: “We fought hard and proved that even after four years playing apart we are still doing excellent together. We respected every opponent and at the end managed to take the title.”

His partner Bahč added: “I would like to congratulate the other finalists for their performance. We delivered a great fight already in the group stage and did it all over again in the finals. This title is really important for us, we reached our goal and I am looking forward to the next competitions.”
