Globetrotter Özsoy recounts her life in Japan after winning Empress’s Cup
Miscellaneous

Luxembourg, December 31, 2017. Neriman Özsoy is a real globetrotter and Turkey’s Volleyball star confirmed this status when she decided to move to Japan earlier this summer for the next stop of an already illustrious career. Only a few days ago she crowned a truly memorable year with victory in the annual Empress’s Cup with her Japanese club – Toyota Auto Body Queenseis – before returning to Turkey for a short break in conjunction with the holiday season.

“Japan is such a beautiful country,” says the bronze medal winner from the 2017 women’s EuroVolley. “Life is very well organised there and it is very peaceful. I am especially in love with Japanese food. As far as Volleyball is concerned, their organisation is just amazing. There is one sentence, “More repetition brings better results”, which summarises the Japanese Volleyball culture in a perfect way.”

Neriman has played in countries as diverse as Turkey, Russia, Poland and Italy throughout her career – and Japan is the next addition to an already impressive list. “Playing in different continents and countries is helping me a lot. I can easily adapt myself to the routine of one or the other country. Since I am the only foreigner on the roster in Japan, my teammates are helping me and taking care of me very much. They are not leaving me alone even off the court. We share very many things together,” she continues.

More and more European players have ventured to the increasingly competitive Asian national leagues lately, so Neriman embodies just the continuation of that trend. “I would recommend this experience to others, for sure! To begin with, playing Volleyball in Japan is a little different than doing it in Europe. I learn new things and I improve myself every single day. The key point is that you are the only foreigner on the team and you are the one who can truly change the course of a match. This situation improves the player very much because you cannot run away from taking responsibility while standing on the court,” she acknowledges.

“I have a stable and very well organised life in Japan,” the outside hitter continues. “Every day I identify additional goals for myself. This is not only about winning trophies or medals, but also about my personal development. I am focusing on my weaknesses rather than on my strengths. As a result, I am really working hard; all I can say is that I am obsessed with my personal improvement!”

While playing Volleyball, Neriman has travelled the world very extensively, taking many lessons from every experience she has lived. “I love to see different countries and cultures. As human beings, we all are equal and all the same. It does not matter which club I am playing for; whether you lose or win, the feelings are the same anywhere in the world.”

Off the court, Neriman is madly in love with newlywed husband Deniz Gencyürek. “I married last summer and it was the best day in my life! As for having children, all I can say is that we are waiting for the right time to do so😉.”

What about the remainder of the current season in Japan and her ultimate goals in Volleyball? “When I signed with my club, I identified two major goals, to win the Empress’s Cup and the national league. Last week we won the Empress’s Cup and now we have one more to go! My ultimate Volleyball dream is to win an Olympic medal with the Turkish national team. As the year draws to a close, I would like to wish all Volleyball fans and everyone peace, health, success and much happiness in 2018.”
