Auspicious start for WEVZA U16 Women’s Championship in Portugal
News from the Zonal Associations

Viana do Castelo, Portugal, December 19, 2017. The first competition day of the 2017 WEVZA U16 Women’s Volleyball Championship did rise high expectations for the fans following the matches on site at the “Santa Maria Maior” hall in Viana do Castelo, or through the live streaming available at

Spain claimed the derby with Portugal 3-2 (22-25, 25-14, 25-22, 24-26, 15-13) in a high-intensity match. The first set in the all-Iberian duel was an authentic iron harm and in the end, Jose Miguel Serrato, Spain’s coach acknowledged: “It was a match in which the victory could have gone to either side. These players are still very young and the anxiety may have determined the result. We played well, but Portugal defended very well and the result was always open until the end. We will try to improve with each match in a very good tournament for the team’s preparation ahead of the next international competitions.”

Germany beat France (3-1; 18-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-23) in the last match of the day, and again the fans had the possibility to watch an excellent Volleyball match between two of the strongest teams of the tournament. Jens Tietböhl, Germany’s coach said: “My players were very nervous since it was their first official international match and France have been playing very well, mainly in defence. This tournament has a good level, Spain, Portugal and France seem strong teams and that is very good to prepare for the U17 European Championship qualifiers that will be played in January.”

In Pool A, Switzerland and the Netherlands won their first matches in the first day of competition.

Johannes Nowotny, Switzerland’s coach commented on the 3-1 win (25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21) against Belgium: “It is always good to win and this victory was even more important since it was achieved in the first international match for these players. Our goal in this tournament is to be able to progress match by match and play as we did today, with a good service, without errors and 100% focussed.”

After the win against Portugal “B” (3-0; 25-16, 25-17, 25-23) Eelco Beijl, the Dutch coach highlighted that “this tournament has the ideal timing to prepare for the U17 European Championships. It is well organised and the people here are very welcoming. We feel that we have all the conditions to make a good preparation. Our goal is to develop as a team and for that to happen we need to face the best teams. Winning the first match is always important, since there is always much anxiety in the mix and winning always provides an extra boost of confidence.”
