Vikings have to accept home heavy loss to Foinikas SYROS
2018 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Men

Bergen, Norway, December 6, 2017. Norway’s Viking TIF BERGEN and Foinikas SYROS from Greece went head to head on Wednesday night in the 16th Finals of the 2018 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Men. Foinikas SYROS came out on top with an important away victory (3-0; 25-15, 25-22, 25-19).

“We never found the rhythm and did not play our best Volleyball. We have had a tight programme with matches in the Nordic Club Championships, Norwegian Mizuno League and the Norwegian Cup. However, the players say that they are not tired, so it might be more a mental than a physical issue,” Viking TIF BERGEN head coach Jon Eirik Liseth said.

Viking TIF BERGEN captain and outside hitter Kristian Bjelland became his team’s top scorer with 15 points and 71% perfect reception.

“Foinikas SYROS were solid as we expected. They used their opposite player [Boyan Yordanov, 17 points] wisely and were better than us today. Now we are in a difficult situation and have to win 3-0 or 3-1 in Greece in order to advance to the next round,” Liseth added.

In the second round, Viking TIF BERGEN knocked Norwegian west-coast rival FØRDE VBK out of the 2018 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup, while Foinikas SYROS were qualified directly to the main phase.

“Viking TIF BERGEN have some young, talented players and solid service reception and that kept them into the match. It was not easy for us, but we are happy with the victory. Viking TIF BERGEN players are not full time professionals like us. We have more experience and that paid off in the end,” Foinikas SYROS head coach Sasa Stefanovic commented.

Viking TIF BERGEN libero Oscar Sæther in reception.
