Swedish delegation travels to Turkey to find inspiration and learn from role models
News from the National Federations

Stockholm, Sweden, November 28, 2017. A Swedish Volleyball delegation visited Turkey for a couple of days in late November 2017. The group consisted of Mr Saffet Eraybar, President of the Swedish Volleyball Federation, Mr Ismo Peltoarvo, National Teams’ Coordinator, Mr Guillermo Gallardo, head coach of the women’s national team and Mr Paul Engström, National League Coordinator.
The aim of the visit was to see how the Turkish Volleyball Federation manages its league and national teams and to discuss the possibilities of future collaboration between the respective national federations. The Swedes obviously travelled to Turkey also in order to find inspiration from one of the most influential and successful Volleyball nations in the world, which boasts many strong clubs and national teams performing at the highest international level.
The first stop was Istanbul where meetings with the Turkish Volleyball Federation’s Marketing and License Departments took place. After that, the Swedish delegation spent one day in Ankara including a memorable meeting with the President of the Turkish Volleyball Federation, Mr Mehmet Akif Üstündağ. They also had the opportunity to sit down with different departments including those in charge of international affairs, finance and national league as well as with the Refereeing Commission.
Another interesting stop was at the Turkish Volleyball Federation’s Volleyball Academy, i.e. the Ankara TVF Spor Lisesi Müdürü. The meeting with principal, Mr Mehmet Tuna ended with the wish of implementing some kind of cooperation in the future between the Ankara School and Sweden’s National Volleyball School in Falköping, thus working together to develop the respective talent programmes and players.
Besides the Turkish Volleyball Federation, the Swedes also met with a few clubs, namely VakifBank and Galatasaray in Istanbul and Halkbank in Ankara, to find inspiration there as well and to see if there are any options of future exchange.
Of course, the journey included some great matches too, and more specifically women’s games between Galatasaray and BVİ Kameroğlu, VakifBank and Fenerbahçe and the men’s match between Galatasaray and TKD Enerji Gümüşhane Torul Gençlik.
It was an altogether inspiring and truly educational trip opening doors and giving a number of ideas on how to foster the further development of Volleyball in Sweden.
