Victorious start for Maritza in Plovdiv Cup 2017
News from the clubs

Plovdiv, Bulgaria, October 4, 2017.  The home fans at the magnificent Kolodruma hall in Plovdiv had a lot to cheer about as their favourites from Maritza PLOVDIV started off their Plovdiv Cup 2017 campaign with a tough, but sweet victory. The fifth edition of the traditional women’s Volleyball international tournament got underway with the strongest line-up yet.

For the first time, five teams contest the Plovdiv Cup. In addition to the Bulgarian champions from Maritza, the defending CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup holders BURSA BBSK from Turkey, the runners-up of the same European club competition, Greek champs from Olympiacos PIRAEUS, the previous Challenge Cup winners CSM BUCURESTI from Romania and their fellow citizens Dinamo BUCURESTI, defending Plovdiv Cup winners of the 2016 edition, have gathered in Europe’s oldest living city for a five-day race to the trophy.

“This might as well be the strongest line-up for a similar friendly tournament in any team sport ever held in Bulgaria,” said Maritza PLOVDIV manager Boris Halatchev. “I am sure the sports fans in our city appreciate this opportunity to watch some high-level Volleyball and will come to the Kolodruma to enjoy these interesting matches.”

They were indeed delighted by the hard-fought come-from-behind 3-2 (17-25, 25-15, 16-25, 25-16, 15-11) victory the home team achieved against Dinamo on the first competition night. This match followed the opening ceremony of the tournament, which also included the official presentation of Maritza’s squad for the new season. The 15 players that will carry the burden of defending the national title and the national cup and of representing the country in the 2018 CEV Volleyball Champions League were individually called to the court and applauded by the audience.

Earlier, in the first game of the tournament, Olympiacos managed a 3-1 (30-28, 20-25, 25-21, 25-14) win against CSM BUCURESTI.

Plovdiv Cup 2017 runs through Saturday, October 7, and all matches are streamed live on Maritza’s official YouTube channel.
