Slovenian girls counting the days to U23 World Champs home debut in Ljubljana
News from the National Federations

Ljubljana, Slovenia, September 3, 2017. The young players of Slovenia have begun the last stage of their preparations ahead of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship, which will take place in Ljubljana from September 10 to 17. Their Italian coach Alessandro Chiappini gathered the group on Wednesday, just two days after their return from the European qualifier to the 2018 World Championship held in Rotterdam, where the Slovenians fought bravely to secure their first ever participation in the competition.

Although the young Slovenian team did ultimately not qualify for the Final Round in Japan, the tournament was a great opportunity to gain experience and play against high-level teams, such as the Netherlands, Bulgaria and Belgium. “The tournament in Rotterdam is already history, but the matches against strong opponents were the best possible preparation for the U23 World Championship. Although we did not have much time to rest, I feel we are in a good shape and highly motivated. We have been working really hard and we are all excited about the championship starting in a few days,” Slovenian outside hitter Anita Sobočan said after the promotional action held in the city centre of Ljubljana this weekend ahead of the U23 Worlds.

The Slovenian team has been practicing in Arena Stožice in Ljubljana, i.e. the main venue of the championship, where they will face Brazil and Turkey in the last stage of their preparations before the first match on Sunday, September 10. “We are already focusing on these three matches, two against Brazil and one against Turkey. For now, everything is great. I think we are doing a great job and I really hope we will be in a good shape on Sunday,” the captain of the Slovenian team, Eva Mori added.

The young Slovenian team, mostly composed of girls who won a historic silver medal at the CEV U19 European Championship in 2014, will first face Argentina, and then play against the Dominican Republic, China, Thailand and Egypt in Pool A. Pool B features Brazil, Cuba, Kenya, Japan, Bulgaria and Turkey.
