Teams from Poland and Czech Republic take top honours from second edition of Vzajemna Open Portorož
News from the Zonal Associations

Portorož, Slovenia, August 21, 2017. The second edition of the MEVZA zonal tournament Vzajemna Open Portorož 2017 featured teams from Slovenia, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, Poland, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary and Israel. The competition started with the qualification tournament in the beautiful seaside town of Portorož, where the local Volleyball club Portorož hosted the event in cooperation with the Volleyball Federation of Slovenia. Teams from Poland and Czech Republic eventually claimed the top honours from the women’s and men’s competitions, respectively.

The fans including many holidaymakers could follow the matches at the two courts set up at Marina Portorož and at another three at the main beach of the Slovenian resort.

The first day of the tournament was very hot and long for players and referees alike and featured some very tight matches. Six Slovenian teams eventually made it to the Main Draw, showing that they are catching up with their international competitors. There were no big surprises in the qualification tournament, except for the Czech brothers Robert and David Kufa who lost to Slovenia’s Jernej Potočnik/Vid Jakopin.

Three Slovenian teams were still ‘alive’ in the women’s competition after day one, and with the support of the home crowd one could eventually make it to the semi-finals where Slovakia’s Andrea Strbova/Natalia Dubovcova and Aleksandra Gromadowska/Katarzyna Kociolek of Poland were waiting for their opponents. Slovenia’s youngsters Spela Morgan/Tajda Lovšin finished the tournament in seventh place.

On the second day of the Main Draw, where many expected the weather would worsen, the organisers and the players were quite lucky since there were just a few light showers, which did not disrupt the original schedule.

Slovenia’s ‘Queens of the Beach’ Tjasa Jancar/Tjasa Kotnik finished the competition in fourth place after losing a very close bronze medal match to Magdalena Dostalova/Karolina Rehackova of the Czech Republic (19-21, 21-15, 15-17). Gromadowska/Kociolek eventually crowned their campaign with gold after beating Strbova/Dubovcova in the ‘big final’ 21-11, 18-21, 15-13.

Ondrej Perusic/David Schweiner of the Czech Republic needed only two sets to beat Italy’s Marco Caminati/Enrico Rossi (21-17, 21-19) to secure gold in the men’s competition. In the bronze medal match, Florian Schnetzer/Peter Eglseer of Austria beat Czech Republic’s David Lenc/Marcel Myslivecek 24-22, 24-22 to complete the podium.

It was another great tournament in Portorož, with great matches and many spectators. The players especially liked the attractive boat shuttle to the courts set up at Marina Portorož. The organisers would like to thank the referees, volunteers and all members of their committee for the hard work since together they made the second edition of Vzajemna Open Portorož a great success.
