Frenchmen stand on top of the podium at WEVZA event in Italy
News from the Zonal Associations

Marina di Ravenna, Italy, July 31, 2017. France’s Olivier Barthelemy and Romain Di Giantommaso stood on top of the podium on Sunday as the WEVZA Beach Volleyball tournament held at Coco Loco Beach in Marina di Ravenna finished with a dramatic gold medal match. Barthelemy/Di Giantommaso beat Italy’s Marco Caminati/Enrico Rossi 2-1 (21-19, 19-21, 15-10) to take the top honours from the competition, with Di Giantommaso receiving also the award for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Top-seeded Armin Dollinger/Jonathan Erdmann of Germany had to be content with the bronze medal after claiming the ‘small final’ with Sven Vismans/Jannes van der Ham of the Netherlands (2-0; 21-17, 21-13). The Dutchmen were the real sensation of the tournament as they made it among the top four after starting their campaign from the qualification round.

Home teams Matteo Galli/Federico Morichelli and Emanuele Monduzzi/Fabio Matteoni representing organisers and hosts POWERBEACH ended their campaign in the pool phase and qualification round, respectively.

The event took place in Marina di Ravenna with promoter POWERBEACH delivering it in close cooperation with Volley Action and the Italian Volleyball Federation under the auspices of the Municipality of Ravenna. The WEVZA zonal event in Marina di Ravenna is the only senior tournament held in Italy this year with FIVB / CEV ranking points at stake. Later this summer, in early September, the island of Vulcano will be playing host to the 2017 edition of the CEV U20 Beach Volleyball European Championship.
The CEO of POWERBEACH, Mr Enrico Lupatelli, was pleased with the event and its outcome. “We are very happy with the job we have done and especially with the cooperation we developed with VOLLEY ACTION. Coco Loco was a perfect location for the organisation of this tournament, which gathered a large, excited and knowledgeable crowd. We hope to grow this tournament as we are working hard for the good of Beach Volleyball. Many players who have been travelling the world and have been to many international competitions did like the beach and our organisation. We will now take some rest but will start working again very soon as we look forward to hosting another event next year.”
