Brazilians crowned champions at Espinho Open
News from the National Federations

Espinho, Portugal, July 30, 2017. On Sunday, George Wanderley and Vitor Felipe Gonçalves of Brazil beat Qatar’s Julio Junior and Ahmed Tijan to emerge as the eventual champions of the Espinho Open, the men’s 2-star-event of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour organised by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation and the Espinho Municipality at Praia da Baia.

In front of a full stadium, George and Vitor Felipe rallied to a comprehensive 21-12, 21-13 victory to the delight of the numerous Brazilian fans in attendance – who supported the Qatari team as well, since Julio Junior was born in the South American country as well. “It feels good. It is the first time we take gold from a senior international event. George had already stood on top of the podium at the U19 World Championship here in Portugal. We felt at home and celebrated as if we were in Brazil, due to the support we felt throughout the tournament and mainly today, in the finals,” Vitor said.

The Espinho Municipality President, Mr Pinto Moreira, and the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Council President, Vicente Araujo presented the medals to the eventual winners together with the Oporto Volleyball Association President, Mr Joaquim Vilela.

Before the bronze medal game, a Sitting Beach Volleyball match took place on centre court as well, thus following up on the most recent project implemented by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation, with the team of Castelo da Maia GC edging their opponents from APD Braga, but it was sportsmanship that won in the end.

Norway’s Anders Berntsen Mol and Mathias Berntsen took the bronze medal in Espinho after recording a 2-0 (22-20, 21-15) victory in the derby with Christian Sandlie Sørum and Svein Oddmund Solhaug. Event tough they did not reach the final, Mol and Berntsen were very happy with the result: “We are very happy, since it’s our first medal from a World Tour event. We hope that this will be only the first and there will be many more to come in future,” the Beach Volleyball ‘Vikings’ commented.
