Young Red Dragons edge Germany to claim WEVZA U19 men’s championship
News from the Zonal Associations

Bad Blankenburg, Germany, July 18, 2017. Belgium claimed the top honours from the 2017 WEVZA U19 Men’s Volleyball Championship, which finished on Sunday with the young Red Dragons edging hosts Germany 3-2 (25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 17-25, 15-12) in the ‘grand finale’ of the tournament.

Germany and Belgium had made it to the final after dropping only two and one set respectively in their previous matches. Belgium caught a promising start to the game and put a lot of pressure on Germany, with the hosts seemingly not able to find a solution to their problems. As a result, Belgium easily claimed a 2-0 lead in the match. “During the first two sets Belgium was clearly playing the better game and we obviously had problems to adjust. We came back fighting as much as we could, but unfortunately we ended up losing at the tiebreak,” said after the final Germany coach Johan Verstappen. Indeed, his team changed gear in the third set and scored point after point, especially thanks to their opposite Julian Meissner, who topped the charts in the end with 23 points. However, Belgium regrouped in the fifth set and their flawless game helped them come out victorious in the end to take the gold medals from the tournament.

Portugal finished in seventh place after sweeping Switzerland aside 3-0 before France settled for fifth place after edging the Netherlands 3-2. Vice-European champions Italy had to be content with bronze and fought for five sets too in the third place match with Spain.

Germany coach Verstappen deserved a few warm words to the Landessportschule Bad Blankenburg and the Thuringian Volleyball Federation for hosting the competition: “We had a great tournament in an amazing sports centre, whose team organised everything really well – my compliments to the local organisers.”
