Italy claim gold at WEVZA U18 Women’s Championship
News from the Zonal Associations

Valladolid, Spain, July 16, 2017. On Sunday, Italy claimed the top honours from the 2017 WEVZA U18 Women’s Championship held in Valladolid, Spain. The Italian side delivered an outstanding performance throughout the tournament and showed their supremacy at the competition gathering the U18 national teams from the Western European Zonal Association (WEVZA).

In the final, Italy beat The Netherlands 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-23). The Dutch side tried to surprise the top favourites but could not stop the efficiency of the Italian players. The ‘Azzurrine’ showed their offensive power to dominate the end of each set and to finish the match in three periods.

The third position went to France. The French side defeated hosts Spain 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16) and therefore prevented the local team from making the podium. The Spaniards tried to give the local fans a reason to celebrate and aimed at controlling the actions from the other side of the net. However, the French girls showed superiority in their offensive system and produced a remarkable performance to take the bronze medal from the tournament.

Belgium claimed the fifth position in the final standing after defeating Switzerland 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24). The Belgian side managed to present a more effective performance towards the end of each set to prevent any Swiss comeback. The players coached by Fien Callens took the required edge at the end of the three periods to seal a 3-0 victory.

Spain U16 national team finished their campaign in seventh place following their victory over Portugal 3-2 (23-25, 25-11, 23-25, 25-19, 17-15). The Spanish side consisting of the youngest players of the tournament got its first triumph in the competition in a rollercoaster of a match against their Iberian neighbours. After four close sets, the clash ended in a thrilling tiebreaker. Spain had more luck on their side and sealed it at 17-15 to close the match 3-2 in their favour.
