Volleyball youngsters to gather in Portugal for 2017 Summer Cup
News from the National Federations

Porto, Portugal, June 29, 2017. The XVIII Summer Cup 2017 will take place July 5-9 in Lousã, Portugal (some 28 km from Coimbra) in collaboration with the municipalities of Miranda do Corvo, Serpins, Góis and Vila Nova de Poiares. The competition is open to the following age groups:

•    Under 14 (“Infantis”) boys and girls: born in 2003 and after
•    Under 15 (“Iniciados”) boys and girls: born in 2002 and after
•    Under 16 (“Cadetes”) boys and girls: born in 2001 and after
•    Under 18 (“Juvenis”) boys and girls: born in 1999/2000 and after.

The very first edition of the Summer Cup took place in 2000 and last year the organisers could welcome as many as 128 teams from six countries, i.e. Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. Those who have attended this competition before know how it has evolved as well as the importance it has in motivating young people to continue playing the game. The organisers hope to raise the level of the event’s delivery, knowing that there is still room for improvement.

The Organising Committee has identified the following goals:

•    Extend the 2016-2017 season, so that the participating teams are motivated and keep training beyond the regular season
•    Mark the end of the season with a competitive tournament, where players can socialise and make new friends
•    Gather in Lousã and in the neighbouring municipalities in the central region of Portugal as many members as possible of the national and international youth Volleyball community
•    Allow coaches to test teams and players that will be a part of their U14 teams in the 2017-2018 season. This opportunity is particularly important for the teams that still played Mini Volleyball this year and want to start getting familiar with Volleyball 6x6 by entering the U14 tournament
•    As for U15 and U16 teams, prepare for the next season and experiment with new tactics / line-ups.
•    U18 teams can use a libero player, thus preparing for the kind of game they will play when moving up to the U19 age group in 2017-2018.
