CEV delegation impressed with world’s largest youth Volleyball tournament
News from the CEV

Helsinki, Finland, June 11, 2017. CEV Vice President Ms Margaret Ann Fleming, CEV Board of Administration Member Mr Mirosław Przedpełski and CEV Managing Director Mr Thorsten Endres paid a visit to Finland earlier this week where they spent a couple of days, visiting, inter alia, also the world’s largest youth Volleyball competition, the Fortum Power Cup annually hosted by the Finnish Volleyball Association.

“For us it is very inspiring to see so many age groups and 7,000 participants in one tournament. It shows other Federations what they can do. Finland have proved that if you have a vision, you can make it done,” Ms Fleming said. “It was also very exciting for the kids to meet all of the national team players personally.”

Before the World League tournament in Helsinki, young kids had indeed the opportunity to play their favourite game with the whole Finnish men’s national team for about 90 minutes. Obviously, many of the kids got autographs and took selfies with their own heroes.

All participants from the Fortum Power Cup could also follow the World League matches played in Helsinki from Thursday to Saturday. A lot of them witnessed the match between Finland and Australia, which set an all-time record of attendance for a Volleyball match of the Finnish national team with as many as 7,723 people fans following the game from the stands of Hartwall Arena.

The CEV delegation also met in Helsinki several Finnish state and sports dignitaries. Ms Fleming and her colleagues had a pleasant meeting with them at the Parliament House. The meeting was hosted by Finland’s MP, Mr Olavi Ala-Nissilä, who is also a CEV Internal Auditor and a former chairman of the Finnish Volleyball league (Mestaruusliiga).

Apart from the top management of the Finnish Volleyball Association, including President Pasi Sydänlammi and Secretary General/CEO, Keijo Säilynoja, the meeting with the CEV delegation was attended by, inter alia, Mr Arto Satonen - MP, Second Deputy Speaker of the country’s Parliament and Former President of the Finnish Volleyball Association, Ms Tiina Kivisaari - Director of the Sports Division at the Ministry of Education and Culture, Mr Tapio Korjus - Chairman of the State Sports Council, Director of the Kuortane Olympic Training Centre and an Olympic gold medallist in the men’s javelin from the 1988 Games in Seoul, Mr Mikko Salonen - Secretary General/CEO of the Finnish Olympic Committee, and Mr Arto Heinonen - Manager CRS at LähiTapiola, the main sponsor of Finnish Volleyball and of the country’s national teams.
