Belgian ‘visitors’ claim top honours at NEVZA zonal event in Odense
News from the Zonal Associations

Odense, Denmark, June 11, 2017. The tradition of Norwegian teams taking the top honours from NEVZA women’s tournaments held on Danish soil came to an end on Sunday in Odense. Belgium’s wild-card holders Liesbeth Mouha/Katrien Gielen, who joined the competition following a change to the regulations earlier this year, went all the way and claimed the gold medal after delivering a convincing performance throughout the whole weekend. Mouha and Gielen did not lose a single set on their way to the top.

In the final, the Belgians outclassed the second seeded Norwegian team Ingrid Lunde/Oda Johanne Ulveseth who earlier on Sunday had beaten the Danish team Line Trans Hansen/Maria Elisabeth Tyndeskov in the semis. The Belgians rallied to a 21-15, 21-9 victory at the end of a one-sided final match.

In the bronze medal game, the Danish team Trans Hansen/Tyndeskov met a stronger opponent in the second Norwegian top team Victoria Faye Kjølberg/Ane Guro Tveit Hjortland, who claimed third place following a 21-17, 21-14 victory.

Teams from Norway confirmed their dominant role within NEVZA but had to be content with silver and bronze as Mouha/Gielen, two players with a wealth of experience also from the FIVB World Tour, were too much to stand for the Nordic opposition.

As for hosts Denmark, Trans Hansen and Tyndeskov were the best among the home teams finishing the competition in fourth place. Along their way, they beat another two Danish teams in Helle Søndergaard/Simone Okholm Hansen, who finished the tournament in fifth place, and Cecilie Køllner Olsen/Lærke Mygind Grønfeldt, who were probably a little disappointed with their seventh place.

Victoria Palmer/Jessica Grimson of England finished in fifth place, whilst the best Swedish team was Fanny Lindström/Lisa Sundberg down in seventh.

Sunday again offered lots of sun from a cloud-free sky, shining on the many spectators cheering for the determined players fighting for victories on the hot Danish sand. The teams praised the local organisers for hosting a very good tournament with good conditions all over.
