Danish teams optimistic ahead of NEVZA event in Kolding
News from the Zonal Associations

Kolding, Denmark, June 1, 2017. As many as five Danish teams are ready to defend the red and white colours, when the Beach Park Kolding will be hosting a men’s NEVZA Zonal Beach Volleyball tournament from June 3 to 5. The question is whether their level is good enough for a spot at the top of the final standing.

The best-ranked Danish team consist of last year’s rising star from the Danish Beach Volleyball Tour, Morten Overgaard, and his regular buddy on the sand, Daniel Jonassen. They are looking forward to the NEVZA tournament in Kolding this weekend: “We expect to reach the same level that we showed at the end of last season,” Jonassen said.

“If we reach that level, we believe that we can challenge the best teams from the Nordic countries. The question is whether we are on that level already now? Of course, we believe that,” he added.

“We very much depend on taking ranking points from this event to get to play on the European Beach Volleyball Tour. Therefore, we hope to finish in the top half of the charts at the NEVZA event in Kolding,” Jonassen concluded.

Next to Overgaard and Jonassen, Denmark will have four other teams competing in Kolding. The lowest ranked team from the home country is Mads Steffens and Niels Heden Friis. They come to Kolding with a fresh win from last weekend’s event on the Danish Tour, but they do not expect to repeat that same feat in Kolding.

“We are a completely new team, so our focus is not on the results but more on our own performance. We do not expect to win the tournament but rather to earn from playing against good teams of an international level. On top of this, we hope to play some Volleyball worth seeing,” Steffens said.

The Danish tandems will be competing for the top honours against four teams from England, three from Finland, four from Sweden and as many as six from Norway. Furthermore, the NEVZA Competitions Regulations were changed for this year, thus opening participation to teams from countries not belonging to NEVZA. As a result, Antonis Liotatis and Antreas Savvidis from Cyprus will compete in Kolding.

The NEVZA tournament is organised by Volleyball Denmark in cooperation with Kolding Beachvolley.
