Volleyball takes centre stage in Tbilisi downtown to celebrate Georgia’s Independence Day
News from the National Federations

Tbilisi, Georgia, May 26, 2017. On the day Georgia celebrated the 26th anniversary since the country’s independence from the Soviet Union, the national government decided to host a number of sporting events to coincide with the celebrations. The programme included Volleyball matches as well, with a Volleyball court set up right in Tbilisi downtown – and with players of different ages and skills joining the members of the women’s national team on this special occasion.

Georgia national team members played several sets together with the children in attendance and contributed to a real Volleyball party – a joy to watch and witness for everyone who was there. The Volleyball court remained available all day long for the passers-by willing to test their skills and play a few rallies.

The President of the Georgian Volleyball Federation, Mr Irakli Chachua, attended the event together with the country’s Minister of Energy, Mr Kakha Kaladze, and Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Mr Tariel Khechikashvili.

Georgia will host later this year the Final Round of the 2017 women’s EuroVolley together with Azerbaijan. Tbilisi will be the venue for one of four preliminary pools, with hosts Georgia taking on the national teams of Belarus, Croatia and Italy.
