Lithuanian golden girls take top honours from first stop of EEVZA Beach Volleyball Tour
News from the Zonal Associations

Koropove, Ukraine, May 22, 2017. The first stop of this year’s EEVZA Beach Volleyball Tour ended on Sunday in Koropove with an all-Lithuanian gold medal match where Monika Povilaityte and Ieva Dumbauskaite emerged victorious from the clash with their compatriots Urte Andriukaityte and Irina Zobnina.

Even though as many as eight teams from Ukraine had made it to the 1/8 finals, only two progressed to the next stage of the competition. Poland’s Kinga Legita/Marta Lodej and Scotland’s Lynne Beattie/Melissa Coutts also lost at that same round of the tournament on Ukrainian sand.

Two teams from Lithuania plus one from Latvia and Ukraine eventually made it to the semis – and these were the top four seeds of the competition. Andriukaityte/Zobnina won the first semi-final where they upset local favourites Iryna and Inna Makhno 2-0 (21-17, 21-18). In the second semi, Dumbauskaite and Povilaityte beat reigning U22 European champions Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka from Latvia 2-1 (20-22, 21-18, 15-10) at the end of a very intense game.

The Makhno twins could not make up for their setback in the semis and ended up losing the bronze medal match as well to Graudina/Kravcenoka with the Latvians stamping a 21-17, 24-22 victory.

The final was an all-Lithuanian affair with the two teams knowing each other very well and putting up a fight for the top honours in the competition. Dumbauskaite and Povilaityte were the ones who had the upper hand in the end (21-18, 24-22), thus taking the gold medal from the first stop of this year’s EEVZA Beach Volleyball Tour.

All participants spent positive words about the organisation of the tournament, expressing their hope they will come back again to Koropove to take part in another Beach Volleyball competition as well as to enjoy the fascinating landscape surrounding the venue.
