Portuguese champions crowned on all levels

Porto, Portugal, May 15, 2017. This weekend Benfica LISBOA won (3-0: 25-21, 25-17, 25-19) against SC ESPINHO in the fifth and last match of the Elite Division play-offs, held at Estadio da Luz, and conquered the title of national champion of the I Division – Elite 2016/2017.

The Benfica opposite, Hugo Gaspar, was the best scorer of the match, with 22 points, followed by the outside hitter Roberto Reis, with 13. Benfica raised the trophy for the seventh time, the fourth in the last five years, with SC ESPINHO remaining the club with the most titles won (18), the last of which came in 2011/12.

At the end of the match, SL Benfica’s coach, Jose Jardim, said: “After a first phase of the championship without defeats, we suffered a lot to achieve this title, but we played with responsibility to be able to win it and we did it. The players were extraordinary.”

AJ Fonte do Bastardo also won, this weekend, the I Division national championship, by rallying to a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-22, 25-19) against Vitoria SC in the 3rd match of the playoff, held in Terceira Island, Azores. Joao Jose’s players Joao Freitas (opposite) and Kristopher Johnson (middle blocker) were the best scorers of the match with 15 and 14 points respectively.

In the women’s championship it was also a team from Azores that won the title, namely S. Miguel Island.
Clube K conquered the I Division national championship by winning 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-10) against CF “Os Belenenses” in the third match of the Final’s play-offs. Maiara Moreira and Nicole Silva were the best scorers of the match with 28 and 17 points.

In the Cadets Finals, held from Friday till Sunday, the boys from AA S. Mamede conquered the national title by winning by 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-6), against Leixões SC, in the final match held at the Esmoriz GC hall.

In the girls competition, it was Leixões SC that raised the title by winning against Ala Nun'Álvares de Gondomar, by 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-19), in Gondomar, European City of Sport 2017.
