Portugal’s LEIXÕES SC claim first national league title in 25 years
News from the National Federations

Porto, Portugal, May 8, 2017. The team of LEIXÕES SC coached by Mário Martins wrote history on Saturday by rallying to a 3-1 victory (25-13, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20) over PORTO Vólei at the Centro de Desportos e Congressos de Matosinhos hall, thus claiming the title of Portugal women’s national league champions.

After a record of eleven consecutive wins in the 70’s and 80’s, the Matosinhos “Mermaids”, did not repeat the same feat for more than 20 years before standing on top of the podium at the end of this year’s championship series where they played the winners of this season’s Super Cup.

Juliana Rosas and Carla Sousa, both from LEIXÕES SC, were the best scorers of the match with 22 and 13 points, respectively.

Martins commented at the end of the match: “It is an indescribable moment, since this victory was both tasty and difficult. What we feel is incredible, because we managed to give this joy to our fans, 25 years after the last title and at the same time, we made this team go down in the history of our club.”
