ACH Volley and Nova KBM Branik take top honours in Slovenian national league
News from the National Federations

Ljubljana, Slovenia, April 28, 2017. The Slovenian national league just finished with Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR claiming the women’s title for the fourteenth time in their history after earlier this season they had won the national cup as well. ACH Volley LJUBLJANA lost to Calcit KAMNIK in the national cup, but regrouped to claim their thirteenth crown in the men’s national league – this accounting for their fourteenth title overall.

ACH Volley LJUBLJANA broke the resistance of Calcit KAMNIK after five exciting matches. The final series started with a 3-1 win for Calcit. ACH Volley came back with two wins in a row, but the team from Kamnik prolonged the championship series to five matches for the first time since the 2002-2003 season. Volleyball fans in a crowded sports hall Tivoli witnessed another Volleyball spectacle where ACH Volley eventually emerged victorious.

“When they have to do so, ACH Volley always play their best game. Before my boys took to the court, I told them to play for each other and for the team, and not to think about the opposition. Tactically speaking, we played just the same as we did on Monday, but the approach was completely different today. And this was what decided the match and the championship,” Zoran Kedačič, coach of ACH Volley LJUBLJANA said after the match, sharing the victory together with Matija Pleško, their 40-year-old veteran, a former national team member, who celebrated his thirteenth national league title – all of them won wearing the shirt of ACH Volley.

The women’s championship was far less exciting and dramatic than the men’s competition. The two best Slovenian teams for the past few years, Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR and Calcit LJUBLJANA, did once again clash for the top honours. The players from Slovenia’s capital were more successful in the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons, when they claimed one national cup and two championship titles, thus representing Slovenia in the CEV Volleyball Champions League – the first Slovenian women’s team to do so in more than a decade.

However, this season was all about Nova KBM Branik. Some weeks ago in early March, the team from Maribor claimed the national cup before sweeping three matches in a row – dropping only one set – along the way to seizing the championship title as well. The result could have been different, if Calcit had been able to rely on their best players – Tina Lipicer Samec and Olivera Kostić – for the championship series.

“It was difficult to start this last match, since everybody in Slovenia expected it would be the last. My players were too nervous in the beginning, but after we lost the first set, they managed to perform at a much higher level. They were really motivated through the whole championship, trying really hard to bring the title back to Maribor,” the coach of Nova KBM Branik, Bruno Najdič said after his team won their fourteenth national league title.
