Turkish Federation launch revamped Beach Volleyball league focussing on clubs’ participation
News from the National Federations

Ankara, Turkey, April 14, 2017. The Turkish Volleyball Federation will be organising this year the first TVF Beach Volleyball Club League – something truly unique where participation is open to clubs. The concept is likely to produce the most competitive Beach Volleyball league of any kind in the world. TVF Vice President Alper Sedat Aslandas, TVF Secretary General Nihal Isci and TVF Beach Volleyball Director Oguz Degirmenci introduced the project to a number of media at a meeting held at Baskent Volleyball Hall in Ankara.

“This year we decided to change the status and format of the TVF Beach Volleyball League,” Mr Aslandas said. “We are organising a Beach Volleyball league with participation open to clubs only. Looking at the statistics, this will be the biggest Beach Volleyball league of any kind in the world. Even though players could participate individually, we have decided to structure the league in such a way that clubs can participate. The registration is open until April 20 and at this stage, as many as 83 clubs have signed up – this accounting for about 300 athletes and 130 teams – 67 and 63 in the men’s and women’s competition, respectively.”

“The league is divided into two stages,” he continued. “There will be regional competitions across as many as nine cities – Antalya, Ankara, Bursa, Elazig, Istanbul, Izmir, Mersin, Mardin and Samsun – and according to the quotas assigned to each region, the best teams from the respective competitions will get the right to participate in the national finals. These will take place from June 30 to July 2, 2017 at Kumkapi Beach in Sinop and will feature 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams. We expect to broadcast the finals nationwide on TV and the eventual winners will receive the title of ‘2017 TVF Beach Volleyball Club League champions’. We strongly believe that this project will strongly contribute to the development of Beach Volleyball in Turkey.”

TVF Beach Volleyball Director Oguz Degirmenci: “We started developing a Beach Volleyball league back in 2009. Over the last few years, the sport has developed tremendously and reached a much higher level. We have reached a good position on the global stage and we are now among the first countries coming to people’s mind when thinking about Beach Volleyball. We have been having talks with the Balkan Volleyball Association for two years and are planning to extend our league across the Balkans with some minor changes. I very much hope that the format of the Turkish league can be extended to the Balkan area, Europe and the rest of the world. Our players competing in the league will have the opportunity to make the national team and to represent Turkey in international competitions organised by the CEV and FIVB. I think we planned our calendar very well for this year and the league will start immediately upon completion of the indoor season. I believe we will have a good and successful season.”
