Young Slovenian Volleyball players join global fight against doping
News from the National Federations

Ljubljana, Slovenia, April 10, 2017. More than 50 teams of 12 and 13 years-old future Volleyball stars in the women’s category, and more than 100 teams in U16 men’s and women’s category, were competing all over Slovenia last weekend, trying to secure their spots in the Top 4 and Top 8 final tournaments of their respective 2016-2017 National Championships.

The results were certainly very important for the youngsters, who practice from three to five times per week throughout the season.  However, there was another mission to complete for the players this weekend as they all signed posters and made commitments not to use any form of doping in their sporting careers.

The Volleyball Federation of Slovenia responded to an invitation from the Slovenian Anti-Doping Organisation to get involved in a Play True Day campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to acquaint athletes, as well as the entire sports public, with the global fight against doping.

The Slovenian U18 national women’s team was included in the project, too, spreading the word about the anti-doping campaign during the 2017 CEV European Championship in Arnhem, The Netherlands.

Play True Day was originally initiated in 2014 by 17 South American countries, in cooperation with WADA and based on the Montevideo Declaration. In the first few years it was celebrated only in South America, but in 2016, five European countries (Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Croatia and Malta, now joined by Romania) decided to enforce the Play True Day in Europe as well.
