AVC FAMALICÃO claim Portugal women’s national cup for second straight year
News from the National Federations

Porto, Portugal, April 4, 2017. AVC FAMALICÃO raised, doing so for the second consecutive time, the trophy of the Portuguese women’s national cup after edging LEIXÕES SC by 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22) on Sunday at a crowded Povoa de Varzim competition hall.

Juliana Rosas from LEIXÕES SC was the best scorer of the match with 28 points, while Ana Rita Novais, with 15, was the most prolific player for the eventual winners of the competition.

Rogerio Paula, who has been the coach of AVC FAMALICÃO for three weeks only: “This win is the result of a collective effort. I told them that this match had nothing to do with the national championship [LEIXÕES had eliminated AVC in the battle for the championship title] and they listened to each word. They understood my position when I accepted this challenge and eventually were the deserved winners of the competition.”

Fabiola Gomes, AVC player and a member of the Portuguese national team, returned to competition a couple of weeks ago after an injury, which prevented her from playing for almost one year. She could not hide her emotions: “It’s a fresh start to a season marked by many difficulties and, for me, coming from such a prolonged injury this is something that makes me feel emotional, because my goal was only to help as much as I could. I am very proud of this team, which never stopped fighting for the victory.”

LEIXÕES SC and Castelo da Maia GC lead the all-time list of honours for the Portuguese cup with 8 trophies each, followed by Boavista FC (7), CD Ribeirense and CA Trofa (4), AC Portugal (3), SL Benfica, SC Portugal and AVC Famalicão (2), Porto Volei 2014, Colegio do Rosario, CS Madeira, CDUP and CR Estrelas da Avenida (1).
