Ferhat Akbaş named as head coach of Team Japan on the road to Tokyo 2020
News from the National Federations

Istanbul, Turkey, March 23, 2017. Ferhat Akbaş is preparing to take on another important duty after previously working with Turkey women’s national team and more recently with C.S.M. BUCURESTI in the Romanian national league. The still young, yet already renowned Turkish coach will be taking up the role of head coach of the Japanese women’s national team on the road that takes to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Akbaş, who has not lost any single match with his team in Romania since the day (back in January) he started working with C.S.M. BUCURESTI, will be working for the Japan Volleyball Association as Team Japan prepare for the much-anticipated home Olympics that Tokyo will be hosting in 2020. The Turkish expert signed the historic deal in presence of Naoki Miyashita, the General Manager of Japan women’s Volleyball national team. As a result, Akbaş becomes the first foreign-born coach at the helm of Team Japan.

Akbaş – who previously worked for Guangdong Evergrande in China, Türk Telekom, Galatasaray and VakifBank in his home country – became the head coach of the Turkish women’s national team in March 2015 before relinquishing this position in December 2016. Despite his commitments to Team Japan and the Japan Volleyball Association, he will continue his work with C.S.M. BUCURESTI as well. He follows in the footsteps of Masayoshi Manabe, under whose guidance Team Japan won – inter alia – a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics, their first Olympic podium finish since the 1984 Games held in Los Angeles.
